Cyclic Sieving and Plethysm Coefficients
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 371 (2019), 923-947 • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial expression for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_λ$ in the expansion of the plethysm $p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ$ is given for all $d$ dividing $n$ for the cases in which $n=2$ or $λ$ is rectangular. In these cases, the coefficient $\langle p_{n/d}^d \circ s_μ, s_λ \rangle$ is shown to count, up to sign, the number of fixed points of an $\langle s_μ^n, s_λ \rangle$-element set under the $d^{\text{th}}$ power of an order-$n$ cyclic action. If $n=2$, the action is the Schützenberger involution on semistandard Young tableaux (also known as evacuation), and, if $λ$ is rectangular, the action is a certain power of Schützenberger and Shimozono's jeu-de-taquin promotion. This work extends results of Stembridge and Rhoades linking fixed points of the Schützenberger actions to ribbon tableaux enumeration. The conclusion for the case $n=2$ is equivalent to the domino tableaux rule of Carré and Leclerc for discriminating between the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of the square of a Schur function.
Automorphism groups of countable algebraically closed graphs and endomorphisms of the random graph
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 160 (2016) 437-462 • View PublicationBIB
We establish links between countable algebraically closed graphs and the endomorphisms of the countable universal graph $R$. As a consequence we show that, for any countable graph $Γ$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of the endomorphism monoid of $R$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Γ$. Further structural information about End $R$ is established including that Aut $Γ$ arises in uncountably many ways as a Schützenberger group. Similar results are proved for the countable universal directed graph and the countable universal bipartite graph.

Context-free Grammars for Permutations and Increasing Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a grammatical labeling to describe a recursive process of generating combinatorial objects based on a context-free grammar. For example, by labeling the ascents and descents of a Stirling permutation, we obtain a grammar for the second-order Eulerian polynomials. By using the grammar for $0$-$1$-$2$ increasing trees given by Dumont, we obtain a grammatical derivation of the generating function of the André polynomials obtained by Foata and Schützenberger, without solving a differential equation. We also find a grammar for the number $T(n,k)$ of permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ with $k$ exterior peaks, which was independently discovered by Ma. We demonstrate that Gessel's formula for the generating function of $T(n,k)$ can be deduced from this grammar. Moreover, by using grammars we show that the number of the permutations of $[n]$ with $k$ exterior peaks equals the number of increasing trees on $[n]$ with $2k+1$ vertices of even degree. A combinatorial proof of this fact is also presented.

Piecewise-linear and birational toggling
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define piecewise-linear and birational analogues of the toggle-involutions on order ideals of posets studied by Striker and Williams and use them to define corresponding analogues of rowmotion and promotion that share many of the properties of combinatorial rowmotion and promotion. Piecewise-linear rowmotion (like birational rowmotion) admits an alternative definition related to Stanley's transfer map for the order polytope; piecewise-linear promotion relates to Schützenberger promotion for semistandard Young tableaux. The three settings for these dynamical systems (combinatorial, piecewise-linear, and birational) are intimately related: the piecewise-linear operations arise as tropicalizations of the birational operations, and the combinatorial operations arise as restrictions of the piecewise-linear operations to the vertex-set of the order polytope. In the case where the poset is of the form $[a] \times [b]$, we exploit a reciprocal symmetry property recently proved by Grinberg and Roby to show that birational rowmotion (and consequently piecewise-linear rowmotion) is of order $a+b$. This yields a new proof of a theorem of Cameron and Fon-der-Flaass. Our proofs make use of the correspondence between rowmotion and promotion orbits discovered by Striker and Williams, which we make more concrete. We also prove some homomesy results, showing that for certain functions $f$, the average value of $f$ over each rowmotion/promotion orbit is independent of the orbit chosen.

Combinatorial results on (1,2,1,2)-avoiding $GL(p,\mathbb{C}) \times GL(q,\mathbb{C})$-orbit closures on $GL(p+q, \mathbb{C})/B$
Published in International Math. Research Notices 2015, 13148--13193 • View PublicationBIB
Using recent results of the second author which explicitly identify the "$(1,2,1,2)$-avoiding" $GL(p,\mathbb{C}) \times GL(q,\mathbb{C})$-orbit closures on the flag manifold $GL(p+q,\mathbb{C})/B$ as certain Richardson varieties, we give combinatorial criteria for determining smoothness, lci-ness, and Gorensteinness of such orbit closures. (In the case of smoothness, this gives a new proof of a theorem of W.M. McGovern.) Going a step further, we also describe a straightforward way to compute the singular locus, the non-lci locus, and the non-Gorenstein locus of any such orbit closure. We then describe a manifestly positive combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomial $P_{τ,γ}(q)$ in the case where $γ$ corresponds to the trivial local system on a $(1,2,1,2)$-avoiding orbit closure $Q$ and $τ$ corresponds to the trivial local system on any orbit $Q'$ contained in $\overline{Q}$. This combines the aforementioned result of the second author, results of A. Knutson, the first author, and A. Yong, and a formula of Lascoux and Schützenberger which computes the ordinary (type $A$) Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial $P_{x,w}(q)$ whenever $w \in S_n$ is cograssmannian.

Inversions and the Gog-Magog problem
We consider the problem of finding a bijection between the sets of alternating sign matrices and of totally symmetric self complementary plane partitions, which can be reformulated using Gog and Magog triangles. In a previous work we introduced GOGAm triangles, which are images of Magog triangles by the Schützenberger involution. In this paper we introduce left Gog and GOGAm trapezoids. We conjecture that they are equienumerated, and we give an explicit bijection between such trapezoids with one or two diagonals. We also study the distribution of inversions and coinversions in Gog triangles.

An analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and non-symmetric Cauchy kernels for truncated staircases
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a restriction of an analogue of the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence for semi-skyline augmented fillings, due to Mason, to multisets of cells of a staircase possibly truncated by a smaller staircase at the upper left end corner, or at the bottom right end corner. The restriction to be imposed on the pairs of semi-skyline augmented fillings is that the pair of shapes, rearrangements of each other, satisfies an inequality in the Bruhat order, w.r.t. the symmetric group, where one shape is bounded by the reverse of the other. For semi-standard Young tableaux the inequality means that the pair of their right keys is such that one key is bounded by the Schützenberger evacuation of the other. This bijection is then used to obtain %recover an expansion formula of the non-symmetric Cauchy kernel, over staircases or truncated staircases, in the basis of Demazure characters of type $A$, and the basis of Demazure atoms. The expansion implies Lascoux expansion formula, when specialised to staircases or truncated staircases, and make explicit, in the latter, the Young tableaux in the Demazure crystal by interpreting Demazure operators via elementary bubble sorting operators acting on weak compositions.
m-Level rook placements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Goldman, Joichi, and White proved a beautiful theorem showing that the falling factorial generating function for the rook numbers of a Ferrers board factors over the integers. Briggs and Remmel studied an analogue of rook placements where rows are replaced by sets of $m$ rows called levels. They proved a version of the factorization theorem in that setting, but only for certain Ferrers boards. We generalize this result to any Ferrers board as well as giving a p,q-analogue. We also consider a dual situation involving weighted file placements which permit more than one rook in the same row. In both settings, we discuss properties of the resulting equivalence classes such as the number of elements in a class. In addition, we prove analogues of a theorem of Foata and Schützenberger giving a distinguished representative in each class as well as make connections with the q,t-Catalan numbers. We end with some open questions raised by this work.

Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm, jeu de taquin and Kerov-Vershik measures on infinite tableaux
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 28 (2014), no. 2, 598-630 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm (RSK) and Schützenberger's jeu de taquin in the infinite setup. We show that the recording tableau in RSK defines an isomorphism of the following two dynamical systems: (i) a sequence of i.i.d. random letters equipped with Bernoulli shift, and (ii) a random infinite Young tableau (with the distribution given by Vershik-Kerov measure, corresponding to some Thoma character of the infinite symmetric group) equipped with jeu de taquin transformation. As a special case we recover the results on non-colliding random walks and multidimensional Pitman transform.
Dual bases for non commutative symmetric and quasi-symmetric functions via monoidal factorization

In this work, an effective construction, via Schützenberger's monoidal factorization, of dual bases for the non commutative symmetric and quasi-symmetric functions is proposed.
Schützenberger's factorization on the (completed) Hopf algebra of $q-$stuffle product
Published • View PublicationBIB
In order to extend the Schützenberger's factorization, the combinatorial Hopf algebra of the $q$-stuffles product is developed systematically in a parallel way with that of the shuffle product and and in emphasizing the Lie elements as studied by Ree. In particular, we will give here an effective construction of pair of bases in duality.

Diagrams of affine permutations, balanced labellings, and symmetric functions
We generalize the work of Fomin, Greene, Reiner, and Shimozono on balanced labellings in two directions: (1) we define the diagrams of affine permutations and the balanced labellings on them; (2) we define the set-valued version of the balanced labellings. We show that the column-strict balanced labellings on the diagram of an affine permutation yield the affine Stanley symmetric function defined by Lam, and that the column-strict set-valued balanced labellings yield the affine stable Grothendieck polynomial of Lam. Moreover, once we impose suitable flag conditions, the flagged column-strict set-valued balanced labellings on the diagram of a finite permutation give a monomial expansion of the Grothendieck polynomial of Lascoux and Schützenberger. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a diagram to be an affine permutation diagram.
Combinatorics of $φ$-deformed stuffle Hopf algebras
In order to extend the Schützenberger's factorization to general perturbations, the combinatorial aspects of the Hopf algebra of the $φ$-deformed stuffle product is developed systematically in a parallel way with those of the shuffle product.

Combinatorial Semigroup Bialgebras
This paper is devoted to the presentation of combinatorial bialgebras whose coproduct is defined with the help of a commutative semigroup. We consider this setting in order to give a general framework which admits as special cases the shuffle and stuffle algebras. We also consider the problem of constructing pairs of bases in duality and present Schützenberger's factorisations as an application.

Gog, Magog and Schützenberger II: Left trapezoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We are interested in finding an explicit bijection between two families of combinatorial objects: Gog and Magog triangles. These two families are particular classes of Gelfand-Tsetlin triangles and are respectively in bijection with alternating sign matrices (ASM) and totally symmetric self complementary plane partitions (TSSCPP). For this purpose, we introduce left Gog and GOGAm trapezoids. We conjecture that these two families of trapezoids are equienumerated and we give an explicit bijection between the trapezoids with one or two diagonals.

Equivariant Schubert calculus and jeu de taquin
Published in Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 68 (2018), no. 1, 275-318 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce edge labeled Young tableaux. Our main results provide a corresponding analogue of [Schützenberger '77]'s theory of jeu de taquin. These are applied to the equivariant Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Reinterpreting, we present new (semi)standard tableaux to study factorial Schur polynomials, after [Biedenharn-Louck '89], [Macdonald '92] and [Goulden-Greene '94] and others. Consequently, we obtain new combinatorial rules for the Schubert structure coefficients, complementing work of [Molev-Sagan '99], [Knutson-Tao '03], [Molev '08] and [Kreiman '09]. We also describe a conjectural generalization of one of our rules to the equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians, extending work of [Thomas-Yong '07]. This conjecture concretely realizes the "positivity" known to exist by [Anderson-Griffeth-Miller '08]. It provides an alternative to the conjectural rule of Knutson-Vakil reported in [Coskun-Vakil '06].
Radford bases and Schützenberger's Factorizations
In this paper, we present Schützenberger's factorization in different combinatorial contexts and show that its validity is not restricted to these cases but can be extended to every Lie algebra endowed with an ordered basis. We also expose some elements of the relations between the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt bases of the enveloping algebra and their dual families.

A Direct Way to Find the Right Key of a Semistandard Young Tableau
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 17, no. 2, p. 393-400, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
The right and left key of a semistandard Young tableau were introduced by Lascoux and Schutzenberger in 1990. Most prominently, the right key is a tool used to find Demazure characters for sl(n,C). Previous methods used to compute these keys require introducing other types of combinatorial objects. This paper gives methods to obtain the right and left keys by inspection of the semistandard Young tableau.

From Macdonald Polynomials to a Charge Statistic beyond Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
The charge is an intricate statistic on words, due to Lascoux and Schutzenberger, which gives positive combinatorial formulas for Lusztig's q-analogue of weight multiplicities and the energy function on affine crystals, both of type A. As these concepts are defined for all Lie types, it has been a long-standing problem to express them based on a generalization of charge. I present a method for addressing this problem in classical Lie types, based on the recent Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials and the quantum Bruhat order on the corresponding Weyl group. The details of the method are carried out in type A (where we recover the classical charge) and type C (where we define a new statistic).

Gog and Magog triangles, and the Schutzenberger involution
