We establish the existence of an involution on tabloids that is analogous to Schutzenberger's evacuation map on standard Young tableaux. We find that the number of its fixed points is given by evaluating a certain Green's polynomial at $q = -1$, and satisfies a "domino-like" recurrence relation.

We study the combinatorial properties of vexillary signed permutations, which are signed analogues of the vexillary permutations first considered by Lascoux and Schützenberger. We give several equivalent characterizations of vexillary signed permutations, including descriptions in terms of essential sets and pattern avoidance, and we relate them to the vexillary elements introduced by Billey and Lam.

Using Henriques' and Kamnitzer's cactus groups, Schützenberger's promotion and evacuation operators on standard Young tableaux can be generalised in a very natural way to operators acting on highest weight words in tensor products of crystals.
For the crystals corresponding to the vector representations of the symplectic groups, we show that Sundaram's map to perfect matchings intertwines promotion and rotation of the associated chord diagrams, and evacuation and reversal. We also exhibit a map with similar features for the crystals corresponding to the adjoint representations of the general linear groups.
We prove these results by applying van Leeuwen's generalisation of Fomin's local rules for jeu de taquin, connected to the action of the cactus groups by Lenart, and variants of Fomin's growth diagrams for the Robinson-Schensted correspondence.

We consider an involution on the affine Weyl group of type $A$ induced from the nontrivial automorphism on the (finite) Dynkin diagram. We prove that the number of left cells fixed by this involution in each two-sided cell is given by a certain Green polynomial of type $A$ evaluated at -1.
Gamma-positivity in combinatorics and geometry
Gamma-positivity is an elementary property that polynomials with symmetric coefficients may have, which directly implies their unimodality. The idea behind it stems from work of Foata, Schützenberger and Strehl on the Eulerian polynomials; it was revived independently by Brändén and Gal in the course of their study of poset Eulerian polynomials and face enumeration of flag simplicial spheres, respectively, and has found numerous applications since then. This paper surveys some of the main results and open problems on gamma-positivity, appearing in various combinatorial or geometric contexts, as well as some of the diverse methods that have been used to prove it.
Set-Valued Young Tableaux and Product-Coproduct Prographs
Standard set-valued Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux where cells can contain unordered sets of integers, with the added condition that every integer at position $(i,j)$ must be smaller that every integer at both $(i+1,j)$ and $(i,j+1)$. In this paper, we explore properties of standard set-valued Young tableaux with three rows and a fixed number of integers in every cell of each row (referred to as set-valued tableaux with row-constant density). Our primary focus is on standard set-valued Young tableaux with $1$ integer in each first-row cell, $k-1$ integers in each second-row cell, and $1$ integer in each third-row cell. For rectangular shapes $λ=n^3$, such tableaux are placed in bijection with closed $k$-ary product-coproduct prographs: directed plane graphs that correspond to finite compositions involving a $k$-ary product operator and a $k$-ary coproduct operator. That bijection is extended to three-row set-valued Young tableaux of non-rectangular and skew shape, and it is shown that a set-valued analogue of the Schützenberger involution on tableaux corresponds to $180$-degree rotation of the associated prographs. As a set-valued analogue of the hook-length formula is currently lacking, we also present direct enumerations of three-row standard set-valued Young tableaux for a variety of row-constant densities and a small number of columns. We then argue why the numbers of tableaux with the row-constant density $(1,k-1,1)$ should be interpreted as a one-parameter generalization of the three-dimensional Catalan numbers that mirrors the generalization of the (two-dimensional) Catalan numbers provided by the $k$-Catalan numbers.

The non-negative integer cocharge statistic on words was introduced in the 1970's by Lascoux and Schützenberger to combinatorially characterize the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Cocharge has since been used to explain phenomena ranging from the graded decomposition of Garsia-Procesi modules to the cohomology structure of the Grassman variety. Although its application to contemporary variations of these problems had been deemed intractable, we prove that the two-parameter, symmetric Macdonald polynomials are generating functions of a distinguished family of colored words. Cocharge adorns one parameter and the second measures its deviation from cocharge on words without color. We use the same framework to expand the plactic monoid, apply Kashiwara's crystal theory to various Garsia-Haiman modules, and to address problems in K-theoretic Schubert calculus.
Prism tableaux for alternating sign matrix varieties
A prism tableau is a set of reverse semistandard tableaux, each positioned within an ambient grid. Prism tableaux were introduced to provide a formula for the Schubert polynomials of A. Lascoux and M.P. Schützenberger. This formula directly generalizes the well known expression for Schur polynomials as a sum over semistandard tableaux. Alternating sign matrix varieties generalize the matrix Schubert varieties of W. Fulton. We use prism tableaux to give a formula for the multidegree of an alternating sign matrix variety.

Although d-complete posets arose along the interface between algebraic combinatorics and Lie theory, they are defined using only requirements on their local structure. These posets are a mutual generalization of rooted trees, shapes, and shifted shapes. They possess Stanley's hook product property for their P-partition generating functions and Schutzenberger's well defined jeu de taquin rectification property. The original definition of d-complete poset was lengthy, but more succinct definitions were later developed. Here several definitions are shown to be equivalent. The basic properties of d-complete posets are summarized. Background and a partial bibliography for these posets is given.

An identity of Chung, Graham and Knuth involving binomial coefficients and Eulerian numbers motivates our study of a class of polynomials that we call binomial-Eulerian polynomials. These polynomials share several properties with the Eulerian polynomials. For one thing, they are $h$-polynomials of simplicial polytopes, which gives a geometric interpretation of the fact that they are palindromic and unimodal. A formula of Foata and Schützenberger shows that the Eulerian polynomials have a stronger property, namely $γ$-positivity, and a formula of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams does the same for the binomial-Eulerian polynomials. We obtain $q$-analogs of both the Foata-Schützenberger formula and an alternative to the Postnikov-Reiner-Williams formula, and we show that these $q$-analogs are specializations of analogous symmetric function identities. Algebro-geometric interpretations of these symmetric function analogs are presented.

A key fact about M.-P. Schützenberger's (1972) promotion operator on rectangular standard Young tableaux is that iterating promotion once per entry recovers the original tableau. For tableaux with strictly increasing rows and columns, H. Thomas and A. Yong (2009) introduced a theory of $K$-jeu de taquin with applications to $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus. The author (2014) studied a $K$-promotion operator $\mathcal{P}$ derived from this theory, but showed that the key fact does not generally extend to $K$-promotion of such increasing tableaux.
Here we show that the key fact holds for labels on the boundary of the rectangle. That is, for $T$ a rectanglar increasing tableau with entries bounded by $q$, we have $\mathsf{Frame}(\mathcal{P}^q(T)) = \mathsf{Frame}(T)$, where $\mathsf{Frame}(U)$ denotes the restriction of $U$ to its first and last row and column. Using this fact, we obtain a family of homomesy results on the average value of certain statistics over $K$-promotion orbits, extending a $2$-row theorem of J. Bloom, D. Saracino, and the author (2016) to arbitrary rectangular shapes.

We investigate the longstanding problem of finding a combinatorial rule for the Schubert structure constants in the $K$-theory of flag varieties (in type $A$). The Grothendieck polynomials of A. Lascoux-M.-P. Schützenberger (1982) serve as polynomial representatives for $K$-theoretic Schubert classes; however no positive rule for their multiplication is known outside the Grassmannian case. We contribute a new basis for polynomials, give a positive combinatorial formula for the expansion of Grothendieck polynomials in these glide polynomials, and provide a positive combinatorial Littlewood-Richardson rule for expanding a product of Grothendieck polynomials in the glide basis. Our techniques easily extend to the $β$-Grothendieck polynomials of S. Fomin-A. Kirillov (1994), representing classes in connective $K$-theory, and we state our results in this more general context.
A specialization of the glide basis recovers the fundamental slide polynomials of S. Assaf-D. Searles (2016), which play an analogous role with respect to the Chow ring of flag varieties. Additionally, the stable limits of another specialization of glide polynomials are T. Lam-P. Pylyavskyy's (2007) basis of multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions, $K$-theoretic analogues of I. Gessel's (1984) fundamental quasisymmetric functions. Those glide polynomials that are themselves quasisymmetric are truncations of multi-fundamental quasisymmetric functions and form a basis of quasisymmetric polynomials.

The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.

In our previous work arXiv:1305.3543, we employed the approach to Schubert polynomials by Fomin, Stanley, and Kirillov to obtain simple, uniform proofs that the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schutzenberger and Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse represent degeneracy loci for the classical groups in the sense of Fulton. Using this as our starting point, and purely combinatorial methods, we obtain a new proof of the general formulas of arXiv:0908.3628, which represent the degeneracy loci coming from any isotropic partial flag variety. Along the way, we also find several new formulas and elucidate the connections between some earlier ones.
Relating the type A alcove path model to the right key of a semistandard Young tableau, with Demazure character consequences

There are several combinatorial methods that can be used to produce type A Demazure characters (key polynomials). The alcove path model of Lenart and Postnikov provides a procedure that inputs a semistandard tableau $T$ and outputs a saturated chain in the Bruhat order. The final permutation in this chain determines a family of Demazure characters for which $T$ contributes its weight. Separately, the right key of $T$ introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger also determines a family of Demazure characters for which $T$ contributes its weight. In this paper we show that the final permutation in the chain produced by the alcove model corresponds bijectively to the right key of the tableau. From this it follows that the generating sets for the Demazure characters produced by these two methods are equivalent.

We address a unification of the Schubert calculus problems solved by [A. Buch '02] and [A. Knutson-T. Tao '03]. That is, we prove a combinatorial rule for the structure coefficients in the torus-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians with respect to the basis of Schubert structure sheaves. We thereby deduce the conjectural rule of [H. Thomas-A. Yong '13] for the same coefficients. Both rules are positive in the sense of [D. Anderson-S. Griffeth-E. Miller '11] (and moreover in a stronger form). Our work is based on the combinatorics of genomic tableaux and a generalization of [M.-P. Schutzenberger '77]'s jeu de taquin.

We consider Schubert problems with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. These problems are of special interest when the osculation points are all real -- in this case, for zero-dimensional Schubert problems, the solutions are "as real as possible". Recent work by Speyer has extended the theory to the moduli space $\overline{M_{0,r}}$, allowing the points to collide. These give rise to smooth covers of $\overline{M_{0,r}}(\mathbb{R})$, with structure and monodromy described by Young tableaux and jeu de taquin.
In this paper, we give analogous results on one-dimensional Schubert problems over $\overline{M_{0,r}}$. Their (real) geometry turns out to be described by orbits of Schützenberger promotion and a related operation involving tableau evacuation. Over $M_{0,r}$, our results show that the real points of the solution curves are smooth.
We also find a new identity involving `first-order' K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, for which there does not appear to be a known combinatorial proof.

Schubert polynomials were discovered by A. Lascoux and M. Schützenberger in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds in 1980's. These polynomials generalize Schur polynomials, and form a linear basis of multivariate polynomials. In 2003, Lenart and Sottile introduced skew Schubert polynomials, which generalize skew Schur polynomials, and expand in the Schubert basis with the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
In this paper we initiate the study of these two families of polynomials from the perspective of computational complexity theory. We first observe that skew Schubert polynomials, and therefore Schubert polynomials, are in $\CountP$ (when evaluating on non-negative integral inputs) and $\VNP$.
Our main result is a deterministic algorithm that computes the expansion of a polynomial $f$ of degree $d$ in $\Z[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in the basis of Schubert polynomials, assuming an oracle computing Schubert polynomials. This algorithm runs in time polynomial in $n$, $d$, and the bit size of the expansion. This generalizes, and derandomizes, the sparse interpolation algorithm of symmetric polynomials in the Schur basis by Barvinok and Fomin (Advances in Applied Mathematics, 18(3):271--285). In fact, our interpolation algorithm is general enough to accommodate any linear basis satisfying certain natural properties.
Applications of the above results include a new algorithm that computes the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are colored directed graphs encoding the structure of certain finite-dimensional representations of affine Lie algebras. A tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals has recently been realized in a uniform way, for all untwisted affine types, in terms of the quantum alcove model. We enhance this model by using it to give a uniform realization of the combinatorial $R$-matrix, i.e., the unique affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals. In other words, we are generalizing to all Lie types Schützenberger's sliding game (jeu de taquin) for Young tableaux, which realizes the combinatorial $R$-matrix in type $A$. Our construction is in terms of certain combinatorial moves, called quantum Yang-Baxter moves, which are explicitly described by reduction to the rank 2 root systems. We also show that the quantum alcove model does not depend on the choice of a sequence of alcoves joining the fundamental one to a translation of it.
Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the Hermitian symmetric pair $(B_N,A_{N-1})$
We provide combinatorial rules to compute Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials for the Hermitian symmetric pair $(B_N,A_{N-1})$ when the Hecke algebra has unequal parameters. They are obtained by filling regions delimited by paths with ballot strips. We also extend the binary tree algorithm introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger to our case.
