K-promotion on m-packed labelings of posets
Schutzenberger's promotion operator, pro, is a fundamental map in dynamical algebraic combinatorics. At first, its action was mainly considered on standard Young tableaux. But pro was subsequently shown to have interesting properties when applied to natural labelings of other posets. Pechenik defined a K-theoretic version of promotion, pro_K, on m-packed labelings of tableaux. The operator pro was then extended to increasing labelings of other posets. The purpose of the current work is to show that the original action of pro_K on m-packed labelings yields interesting results when applied to partially ordered sets in general, and to rooted trees in particular. We show that under certain conditions, the sizes of the orbits and order of pro_K exhibit nice divisibility properties. We also completely determine, for certain values of m, the orbit sizes for the action on various types of rooted trees such as extended stars, combs, zippers, and a type of three-leaved tree.
An introduction to the symmetric group algebra
This is an introduction to the group algebras of the symmetric groups, written for a quarter-long graduate course. After recalling the definition of group algebras (and monoid algebras) in general, as well as basic properties of permutations, we introduce several families of elements in the symmetric group algebras $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ such as the Young--Jucys--Murphy elements, the (sign-)integrals and the conjugacy class sums. Then comes a chapter on group actions and representations in general, followed by the core of this text: a study of the representations of symmetric groups (i.e., of left $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$-modules), including the classical theory of Young tableaux and Young symmetrizers. We prove in detail the main facts including the characterization of irreducible representations (in characteristic $0$), the Garnir relations, the standard basis theorem, the description of duals of Specht modules, and the hook length formula, as well as a number of less known results. Finally, we describe several bases of $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ that arise from the study of Specht modules, including the Murphy cellular bases.
The methods used are elementary and computational. We aim to assume as little as possible of the base ring $\mathbf{k}$, and to use as little as possible from representation theory (nothing more advanced than Maschke and Jordan--Hölder).
Over 100 exercises (without solutions) are scattered through the text.
Web Diagrams of Cluster Variables for Grassmannian Gr(4,8)
Gaetz, Pechenik, Pfannerer, Striker, and Swanson introduced the concept of hourglass plabic graphs and provided a method for computing web diagrams and invariants corresponding to $4\times n$ Young tableaux, while Elkin, Musiker, and Wright applied Lam's method to explicitly compute the webs compatible with cluster variables in Gr(3,n) and their twists, namely, the preimages of the immanant map introduced by Fraser, Lam, and Le. In this paper, we use these two methods to compute both the web diagrams and the dual webs corresponding to quadratic and cubic cluster variables in the Grassmannian cluster algebra C[Gr(4,8)].
Global fluctuations for standard Young tableaux
We introduce the notion of a Young generating function for a probability measure on integer partitions. We use this object to characterize probability distributions over integer partitions satisfying a law of large numbers and those that satisfy a central limit theorem. We further establish a multilevel central limit theorem, which enables the study of random standard Young tableaux. As applications of these results, we describe the fluctuations of height functions associated with (i) the Plancherel growth process, (ii) random standard Young tableaux of fixed shape, and (iii) probability distributions induced by extreme characters of the infinite symmetric group $S_\infty$. In all cases, we identify the limiting fluctuations as a conditioned Gaussian Free Field.
Twists, Higher Dimer Covers, and Web Duality for Grassmannian Cluster Algebras
We study a twisted version of Fraser, Lam, and Le's higher boundary measurement map, using face weights instead of edge weights, thereby providing Laurent polynomial expansions, in Plücker coordinates, for twisted web immanants for Grassmannians. In some small cases, Fraser, Lam, and Le observe a phenomenon they call "web duality'', where web immanants coincide with web invariants, and they conjecture that this duality corresponds to transposing the standard Young tableaux that index basis webs. We show that this duality continues to hold for a large set of $\text{SL}_3$ and $\text{SL}_4$ webs. Combining this with our twisted higher boundary measurement map, we recover and extend formulas of Elkin-Musiker-Wright for twists of certain cluster variables. We also provide evidence supporting conjectures of Fomin-Pylyavskyy as well as one by Cheung-Dechant-He-Heyes-Hirst-Li concerning classification of cluster variables of low Plücker degree in $\mathbb{C}[\text{Gr}(3,n)]$.
Inversions Tableaux
We introduce inversions tableaux, a new combinatorial model for Schubert polynomials and Stanley symmetric functions that directly specializes to semi-standard Young tableaux in the Grassmannian case. They are a modification of the balanced staircase tableaux of Edelman and Greene. We explicitly describe inversions tableaux that correspond to the lexicographically minimal and maximal monomials in each Schubert polynomial and characterize the unique inversions tableau for dominant permutations. We also characterize the action of generalized chute moves on inversions tableaux, and establish related background that will be used to prove Rubey's chute moves conjecture in upcoming work.
Semisimple algebras related to immaculate tableaux
Given a direct sum $A$ of full matrix algebras, if there is a combinatorial interpretation associated with both the dimension of $A$ and the dimensions of the irreducible $A$-modules, then this can be thought of as providing an analogue of the famous Frobenius-Young identity $n! = \sum_{λ\vdash n} ( f^λ )^{2}$ derived from the semisimple structure of the symmetric group algebra $\mathbb{C}S_{n}$, letting $f^λ$ denote the number of Young tableaux of partition shape $λ\vdash n$. By letting $g^α$ denote the number of standard immaculate tableaux of composition shape $α\vDash n$, we construct an algebra $\mathbb{C}\mathcal{I}_{n}$ with a semisimple structure such that $\dim \mathbb{C}\mathcal{I}_{n} = \sum_{α\vDash n} (g^α)^{2}$ and such that $\mathbb{C}\mathcal{I}_{n} $ contains an isomorphic copy of $\mathbb{C}S_{n}$. We bijectively prove a recurrence for $\dim \mathbb{C}\mathcal{I}_{n}$ so as to construct a basis of $\mathbb{C}\mathcal{I}_{n}$ indexed by permutation-like objects that we refer to as immacutations. We form a basis $\mathcal{B}_{n}$ of $\mathbb{C}\mathcal{I}_{n}$ such that $\mathbb{C} \mathcal{B}_n$ has the structure of a monoid algebra in such a way so that $\mathcal{B}_n$ is closed under the multiplicative operation of $\mathbb{C} \mathcal{I}_n$, yielding a monoid structure on the set of order-$n$ immacutations.
Study of $p$-Young tableaux, Robinson-Schensted correspondence and the lacunary Cauchy identity of group algebras $KG_{r}$ and $KSG_{r}$
In this paper, we develop the Robinson-Schensted correspondence between the elements of the groups $G_{r}$ $(\mathbb{Z}_{p^{r}}\rtimes \mathbb{Z}^{*}_{p^{r}})$ and $SG_{r}$ $(\mathbb{Z}_{p^{r-1}}\rtimes \mathbb{Z}^{*}_{p^{r}})$, along with a pair of the standard $p$-Young tableaux. This approach differs from the classical method, and ours is based on matrix units arising from orthogonal primitive idempotents computed for every group algebra. Some classical properties of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence are discussed. As a by-product, we also extend the Cauchy identity to our setup, which we refer to as the lacunary Cauchy identity. This study offers new insights into the representation theory of these groups and their combinatorial structures.
A tableaux formula for $q$-rook numbers
We provide a formula for the Garsia-Remmel $q$-rook numbers as a sum over standard Young tableaux. We connect our formula with the coefficients in $q$-Whittaker expansion of unicellular LLT functions.
Identifying Orbit Lengths for Promotion
In this work we study Schützenberger's promotion operator on standard Young tableaux via a corresponding graphical construction known as $m-$diagrams. In particular, we prove that certain internal structures of SYT are preserved under promotion and correspond to distinct components of $m-$diagrams. By treating these structures as atomic parts of the $m-$diagram, we provide a simple algorithm for computing the promotion orbit length of rectangular SYT. We conclude the paper by applying our results to (column) semi-standard Young tableaux and prove a formula for the promotion orbit lengths of rectangular (column) SSYT.
From dual canonical bases to positroidal subdivisions
The Grassmannian cluster algebra $\mathbb{C}[\text{Gr}(k, n)]$ admits a distinguished basis known as the dual canonical basis, whose elements correspond to rectangular semi-standard Young tableaux with $k$ rows and with entries in $[n]$. We establish that each such tableau induces a positroidal subdivision of the hypersimplex $Δ(k,n)$ via a map introduced by Speyer and Williams. For $\text{Gr}(2,n)$, we prove that non-frozen prime tableaux correspond precisely to the coarsest positroidal subdivisions of $Δ(2,n)$. Furthermore, we present computational evidence extending these results to $k>2$. In the process, we formulate a conjectural formula for the number of split positroidal subdivisions of $Δ(k,n)$ for any $k \ge 2$ and explore the deep connections between the polyhedral combinatorics of $Δ(k,n)$ and the dual canonical basis of $\mathbb{C}[\text{Gr}(k, n)]$.
Dimensions of compositions modulo a prime
The (ordinary) representation theory of the symmetric group is fascinating and has rich connections to combinatorics, including the Frobenius correspondence to the self-dual graded Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. The $0$-Hecke algebra (of type $A$) is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group, and its representation theory has an analogous correspondence to the dual graded Hopf algebras of quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions. Macdonald used the hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape to determine how many irreducible representations of the symmetric group have dimensions indivisible by a prime $p$. In this paper, we study the dimensions of the projective indecomposable modules of the $0$-Hecke algebra modulo $p$; such a module is indexed by a composition and its dimension is given by a ribbon number, i.e., the cardinality of a descent class. Applying a result of Dickson on the congruence of multinomial coefficients, we count how many ribbon numbers belong to each congruence class modulo $p$. We also extend the result to other finite Coxeter groups.
Eulerian-type polynomials over Stirling permutations and box sorting algorithm
It is well known that ascents, descents and plateaux are equidistributed over the set of classical Stirling permutations. Their common enumerative polynomials are the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which have been extensively studied by many researchers. This paper is divided into three parts. The first parts gives a convolution formula for the second-order Eulerian polynomials, which simplifies a result of Gessel. As an application, a determinantal expression for the second-order Eulerian polynomials is obtained. We then investigate the convolution formula of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials. Among other things, by introducing three new statistics: proper ascent-plateau, improper ascent-plateau and trace, we discover that a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over a class of restricted Stirling permutations equals a six-variable Eulerian-type polynomial over signed permutations. By special parametrizations, we make use of Stirling permutations to give a unified interpretations of the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials and derangement polynomials of types $A$ and $B$. The third part presents a box sorting algorithm which leads to a bijection between the terms in the expansion of $(cD)^nc$ and ordered weak set partitions, where $c$ is a smooth function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. Using a map from ordered weak set partitions to standard Young tableaux, we find an expansion of $(cD)^nc$ in terms of standard Young tableaux. Combining this with grammars, we provide three interpretations of the second-order Eulerian polynomials.
Maximal transitivity of the cactus group on standard Young tableaux
The action of the cactus group $C_n$ on Young tableaux of a given shape $λ$ goes back to Berenstein and Kirillov and arises naturally in the study of crystal bases and quantum integrable systems. We show that this action is $2$-transitive on standard Young tableaux of the shape $λ$ if and only if $λ$ is not self-transpose and not a single hook. Moreover, we show that in these cases, the image of the cactus group in the permutation group of standard Young tableaux is either the whole permutation group or the alternating group, and prove that both cases are possible for infinitely many $λ$ (though the alternating group is more frequent). As an application, this implies that the Galois group of solutions to the Bethe ansatz in the Gaudin model attached to the Lie group $GL_d$ is, in many cases, at least the alternating group. This also extends the results of Sottile and White on the multiple transitivity of the Galois group of Schubert calculus problems in Grassmannians to many new cases.
An exceptional equinumerosity of lattice paths and Young tableaux
We consider families $\mathcal{P}_n$ of plane lattice paths enumerated by Guy, Krattenthaler, and Sagan (1992). We show by explicit bijection that these families are equinumerous with the set $\mathrm{SYT}(n+2,2,1^n)$ of standard Young tableaux.
Connections Between Frames with Rational Eigensteps and Semistandard Young Tableaux
In this paper, we explore a correspondence between frames with rational eigensteps and semistandard Young tableaux (SSYT), via the relation assigning a Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern to a frame via the frame's eigensteps. We will identify how certain key structures in SSYTs correlate with particular frame properties. For example, the weight of an SSYT yields the sequence of norms of any compatible frame. Additionally, this correspondence leads to a novel way to construct the eigensteps of a frame coming solely from tableaux. This is an alternative to the Top Kill algorithm which may be viewed as a combinatorial reinterpretation of the algorithm. We further employ other combinatorial techniques such as the boxcomp method to generate a ``complement" SSYT. On the frame side, this corresponds to a tight frame's Naimark complement as well as to a generalization of the Naimark complement for non-tight frames. Further research points to an analysis of equiangular tight frames and their corresponding tableaux, as well as using more combinatorial operations to further analyze frames.
The Schützenberger involution and colored lattice models
Colored lattice models can be used to describe many different types of special functions of interest in both algebraic combinatorics and representation theory, for example Schur polynomials, nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials, and characters and Whittaker functions for representations of p-adic groups. A notable example is the metaplectic ice model of which there are actually two different variants: a Gamma and a Delta variant. These variants differ in key aspects but surprisingly produce equal partition functions, which are weighted sums over admissible configurations, and this equality is called the Gamma-Delta duality. The duality was used to prove the analytic continuation of certain multiple Dirichlet series and is highly non-trivial, especially since the number of configurations on each side of the equality can differ.
In this paper we construct a new family of solvable, colored lattice models and prove that they are dual to existing lattice models in the literature, including the above metaplectic case and the lattice model for (non-metaplectic) Iwahori Whittaker functions together with its crystal limit for Demazure atoms for Cartan type A. The equality of partition functions is shown using Yang-Baxter equations involving R-matrices mixing lattice model rows of types Gamma and Delta.
For the crystal Demazure lattice model we show that the duality refines to a weight-respecting bijection of states given by the Schützenberger involution on the associated Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns or semistandard Young tableaux. We also show how the individual steps exchanging two rows in the proof of the duality for the partition functions refines to Berenstein-Kirillov, or Bender-Knuth involutions.

We show that a ratio of Schur polynomials $s_λ/s_ρ$ associated to partitions $λ$ and $ρ$ such that $λ\subsetneqρ$ has a negative partial derivative at any point where all variables are positive. This is accomplished by establishing an injective map between sets of pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux that preserves the product of the corresponding monomials. We use this result and the description of the first Laurent coefficient of the Hilbert series of the graded algebra of regular functions on a linear symplectic quotient by the circle to demonstrate that many such symplectic quotients are not graded regularly diffeomorphic. In addition, we give an upper bound for this Laurent coefficient in terms of the largest two weights of the circle representation and demonstrate that all but finitely many circle symplectic quotients of each dimension are not graded regularly diffeomorphic to linear symplectic quotients by $\operatorname{SU}_2$.

We describe how the chromatic symmetric function of two graphs glued at a single vertex can be expressed as a matrix multiplication using certain information of the two individual graphs. We then prove new $e$-positivity results by using a connection between forest triples, defined by the first author, and Hikita's probabilities associated to standard Young tableaux. Specifically, we prove that gluing a sequence of unit interval graphs and cycles results in an $e$-positive graph. We also prove $e$-positivity for a graph obtained by gluing the first and last vertices of such a sequence. This generalizes $e$-positivity of cycle-chord graphs and supports Ellzey's conjectured $e$-positivity for proper circular arc digraphs.
Local algorithms for coplactic switching and evacuation of Young tableaux
Tableau switching is a well studied bijection on pairs of skew Young tableaux which swaps their relative positions. This is achieved by successively sliding the entries of the inner tableaux through the outer one via jeu de taquin (JDT) slides. Tableau coswitching is a similar but coplactic operation, meaning it commutes with any sequence of JDT slides. Coswitching is defined by first performing JDT rectification on the union of the tableaux, switching the resulting pair, then unrectifying the union. This definition requires us to perform large scale modifications to the skew shapes during the rectification and unrectification steps, which is both computationally taxing and obscures the effect of coswitching on the pair of skew tableaux. In previous work, Gillespie and Levinson define an algorithm which computes coswitching as a sequence of local moves, which do not alter the skew shapes of the tableaux, when one of the tableaux is a single box.
In this paper, we extend the results of Gillespie and Levinson (and Gillespie, Levinson, and Purbhoo for type B) to the case the two skew tableaux are of arbitrary size. We also describe multiple bijections on tableaux, each descending to the evacuation shuffling (esh) operation on pairs of dual equivalence classes. We show how special cases of our local algorithm compute the Schützenberger involution on skew tableaux, as well as the wall-crossing and monodromy of certain covering spaces of the moduli space $\overline{M}_{0, r}(\mathbb{R})$.
