Higher Specht polynomials under the diagonal action
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce higher Specht polynomials - analogs of Specht polynomials in higher degrees - in two sets of variables $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ and $y_1,\ldots,y_n$ under the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_n$. This generalizes the classical Specht polynomial construction in one set of variables, as well as the higher Specht basis for the coinvariant ring $R_n$ due to Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada, which has the advantage of respecting the decomposition into irreducibles. As our main application of the general theory, we provide a higher Specht basis for the hook shape Garsia--Haiman modules. In the process, we obtain a new formula for their doubly graded Frobenius series in terms of new generalized cocharge statistics on tableaux.

$n\text{-}Lie_d$ Operad and its Koszul Dual
We study the operad $n\text{-}Lie_d$, whose algebras are graded $n$-Lie algebras with degree $d$ $n$-arity operations, which were introduced in Nambu mechanics and later studied in the algebraic setting with Filippov. We compute the Koszul dual of $n\text{-}Lie_d$, called $n\text{-}Com_{-d+n-2}$, whose relations are derived from the Specht module $S^{(n,n-1)}$ for a partition $(n,n-1)$ of $2n-1$. The intrinsic connection between these two operads come from the eigenvalues of the sequence of graphs $\{\mathcal{O}_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, called the Odd graphs, whose spectrum is related to the lower triangular sequence $\{\mathcal{E}_{r,n}\}$, called the Catalan triangle.

A Solomon Mackey formula for graded bialgebras
Given a graded bialgebra $H$, we let $Δ^{\left[ k\right] }:H\rightarrow H^{\otimes k}$ and $m^{\left[ k\right] }:H^{\otimes k}\rightarrow H$ be its iterated (co)multiplications for all $k\in\mathbb{N}$. For any $k$-tuple $α=\left( α_{1},α_{2},\ldots,α_{k}\right) \in\mathbb{N}^{k}$ of nonnegative integers, and any permutation $σ$ of $\left\{ 1,2,\ldots,k\right\} $, we consider the map $p_{α,σ}:=m^{\left[ k\right] }\circ P_α\circσ^{-1}\circΔ^{\left[ k\right] }:H\rightarrow H$, where $P_α$ denotes the projection of $H^{\otimes k}$ onto its multigraded component $H_{α_{1}}\otimes H_{α_{2}}\otimes\cdots\otimes H_{α_{k}}$, and where $σ^{-1}:H\rightarrow H$ permutes the tensor factors. We prove formulas for the composition $p_{α,σ}\circ p_{β,τ}$ and the convolution $p_{α,σ}\star p_{β,τ}$ of two such maps. When $H$ is cocommutative, these generalize Patras's 1994 results (which, in turn, generalize Solomon's Mackey formula). We also construct a combinatorial Hopf algebra $\operatorname*{PNSym}$ ("permuted noncommutative symmetric functions") that governs the maps $p_{α,σ}$ for arbitrary connected graded bialgebras $H$ in the same way as the well-known $\operatorname*{NSym}$ governs them in the cocommutative case. We end by outlining an application to checking identities for connected graded Hopf algebras.

Splines on Cayley Graphs of the Symmetric Group
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e96 • View Publication • BIB
A spline is an assignment of polynomials to the vertices of a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals, where the difference of two polynomials labeling adjacent vertices must belong to the corresponding ideal. The set of splines forms a ring. We consider spline rings where the underlying graph is the Cayley graph of a symmetric group generated by a collection of transpositions. These rings generalize the GKM construction for equivariant cohomology rings of flag, regular semisimple Hessenberg, and permutohedral varieties. These cohomology rings carry two actions of the symmetric group $S_n$ whose graded characters are both of general interest in algebraic combinatorics. In this paper, we generalize the graded $S_n$-representations from the cohomologies of the above varieties to splines on Cayley graphs of $S_n$, then (1) give explicit module and ring generators for whenever the $S_n$-generating set is minimal, (2) give a combinatorial characterization of when graded pieces of one $S_n$-representation is trivial, and (3) compute the first degree piece of both graded characters for all generating sets.

Viennot shadows and graded module structure in colored permutation groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}$ be a matrix of $n \times n$ variables, and let $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ be the polynomial ring on these variables. Let $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$ be the group of colored permutations, consisting of $n \times n$ complex matrices with exactly one nonzero entry in each row and column, where each nonzero entry is an $r$-th root of unity. We associate an ideal $I_{\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}} \subseteq \mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ with the group $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$, and use orbit harmonics to give an ideal-theoretic extension of the Viennot shadow line construction to $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$. This extension gives a standard monomial basis of $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_{\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}}$, and introduces an analogous definition of ``longest increasing subsequence'' to the group $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$. We examine the extension of Chen's conjecture to this analogy. We also study the structure of $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_{\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}}$ as a graded $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r} \times \mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$ module, which subsequently induces a graded $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r} \times \mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$ module structure on the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $\mathbb{C}[\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}]$.

Quantum state systems that count perfect matchings
In this paper we show how to categorify the $n$-color vertex polynomial, which is based upon one of Roger Penrose's formulas for counting the number of $3$-edge colorings of a planar trivalent graph. Using topological quantum field theory (TQFT), we introduce a quantum state system to build a new bigraded theory called the bigraded $n$-color vertex homology. The graded Euler characteristic of this homology is the $n$-color vertex polynomial. We then produce a spectral sequence whose $E_\infty$-page is a filtered theory called filtered $n$-color vertex homology and show that it is generated by certain types of face colorings of ribbon graphs. For $n=2$, we show that the filtered $n$-color vertex homology is generated by face colorings that correspond to perfect matchings. Finally, we introduce and give meaning to what the vertex polynomial counts when $n \geq 2$. This polynomial is a new abstract graph invariant that can be inferred from certain formulas of Penrose.

Primitive elements in infinitesimal bialgebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any set S, the free magmatic algebra spanned by card(S) binary products is the vector space spanned by the set of all planar rooted binary trees with the internal nodes colored by the elements of S, graded by the number of leaves of a tree. We show that it has a unique structure of coassociative coalgebra such that the coproduct satisfies the unital infinitesimal condition with each magmatic product, and prove an analog of Aguiar-Sottile formula in this context, describing the coproduct in terms of the Moebius basis for the Tamari order. The last result allows us to compute the subspace of primitive elements of any unital infinitesimal S-magmatic bialgebra. As an example, we construct a set of generators of the dual of Pilaud and Pons bialgebra of integer relations and compute an explicit basis of its subspace of primitive elements.

Free resolution of the logarithmic derivation modules of close to free arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies the algebraic structure of a new class of hyperplane arrangement $A$ obtained by deleting two hyperplanes from a free arrangement. We provide information on the minimal free resolutions of the logarithmic derivation module of $A$, which can be used to compute a lower bound for the graded Betti numbers of the resolution. Specifically, for the three-dimensional case, we determine the minimal free resolution of the logarithmic derivation module of $A$. We present illustrative examples of our main theorems to provide insights into the relationship between algebraic and combinatorial properties for close-to-free arrangements.

Graded Multiplicities in the Kostant-Rallis Setting
This paper contains two main results. First, we provide combinatorial branching rules for $\text{GL}_n \downarrow \text{O}_n$ and $\text{GL}_{2n} \downarrow \text{Sp}_{2n}$ extending the Littlewood restriction rules. Second, we use these branching rules and the combinatorics of $\text{GL}_n$-crystals to derive a formula for the graded multiplicity of a $K$-type in the regular functions on the $K$-nilpotent cone for $\text{GL}(n, \mathbb{R})$, $\text{GL}(n, \mathbb{C})$ and $\text{GL}(n, \mathbb{H})$. Due to work of Schmid and Vilonen, these graded multiplicities determine the Hodge $K$-character of the spherical principal series with infinitesimal character 0.

Constructing linked systems of relative difference sets via Schur rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the present paper, we study relative difference sets (RDSs) and linked systems of them. It is shown that a closed linked system of RDSs is always graded by a group. Based on this result, we also define a product of RDS linked systems sharing the same grading group. Further, we generalize the Davis-Polhill-Smith construction of a linked system of RDSs. Finally, we construct new linked system of RDSs in a Heisenberg group over a finite field and family of RDSs in an extraspecial $p$-group of exponent $p^2$. All constructions of new RDSs and their linked systems are based essentially on a usage of cyclotomic Schur rings.
The Leaf Function of Penrose P2 Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 27:3, Discrete Algorithms (September 20, 2025) dmtcs:13662 • View Publication • BIB
We study a graph-theoretic problem in the Penrose P2-graphs which are the dual graphs of Penrose tilings by kites and darts. Using substitutions, local isomorphism and other properties of Penrose tilings, we construct a family of arbitrarily large induced subtrees of Penrose graphs with the largest possible number of leaves for a given number $n$ of vertices. These subtrees are called fully leafed induced subtrees. We denote their number of leaves $L_{P2}(n)$ for any non-negative integer $n$, and the sequence $\left(L_{P2}(n)\right)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ is called the leaf function of Penrose P2-graphs. We present exact and recursive formulae for $L_{P2}(n)$, as well as an infinite sequence of fully leafed induced subtrees, which are caterpillar graphs. In particular, our proof relies on the construction of a finite graded poset of 3-internal-regular subtrees.

Conditions of multiplicity and applications for almost Gorenstein graded rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove that if Cohen-Macaulay local/graded rings $R_1$, $R_2$ and $R$ satisfy certain conditions regarding multiplicity and Cohen-Macaulay type, then almost Gorenstein property of $R$ implies Gorenstein properties for all of $R_1$, $R_2$ and $R$. We apply our theorem to tensor products of semi-standard graded rings and some classes of affine semigroup rings, i.e., numerical semigroup rings, edge rings and stable set rings.

Towards the classification of finite-dimensional diagonally graded commutative algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Any finite-dimensional commutative (associative) graded algebra with all nonzero homogeneous subspaces one-dimensional is defined by a symmetric coefficient matrix. This algebraic structure gives a basic kind of $A$-graded algebras originally studied by Arnold. In this paper, we call them diagonally graded commutative algebras (DGCAs) and verify that the isomorphism classes of DGCAs of dimension $\leq 7$ over an arbitrary field are in bijection with the equivalence classes consisting of coefficient matrices with the same distribution of nonzero entries, while dramatically there may be infinitely many isomorphism classes of dimension $n$ corresponding to one equivalence class of coefficient matrices when $n\geq 8$. Furthermore, we adopt the Skjelbred-Sund method of central extensions to study the isomorphism classes of DGCAs, and associate any DGCA with a undirected simple graph to explicitly describe its corresponding second (graded) commutative cohomology group as an affine variety.
Parahoric Lie algebras and parasymmetric Macdonald polynomials
The main goal of this paper is to categorify the specialized parasymmetric (intermediate) Macdonald polynomials. These polynomials depend on a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra and generalize the symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. To achieve this we introduce cyclic modules of the parahoric subalgebras of the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras such that their characters coincide with the specializations of the parasymmetric polynomials at zero and infinity. These cyclic modules are proved to coincide with standard and costandard objects in certain categories of representations of parahoric algebras. We show that the categories in question are stratified, i.e. they are graded highest weight categories. As a consequence, we derive an analog of the Peter-Weyl theorem describing the bi-module of functions on the parahoric and parabolic Lie groups via the mentioned above standard and costandard modules.

Two associative operads of packed words
The associative operad is a central structure in operad theory, defined on the linear span of the set of permutations. We build two analogs of the associative operad on the linear span of the set of packed words which turn out to be set-theoretical. By seeing a packed word as a surjective map between two finite sets, our first operad is graded by the cardinality of the domain and the second one, by the cardinality of the codomain. In the same way as the associative operad of permutations contains as quotients the duplicial and interstice operads, we derive similar structures for our operads of packed words. We propose also an analogue of Dynkin idempotent of Zie algebras in this context of operads of packed words.

Graded Betti numbers of a hyperedge ideal associated to join of graphs
Published in Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, 48 (116), 2025 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on the vertex set $V(G)$ and let $r$ be a positive integer. We consider the hypergraph $\mathrm{Con}_r(G)$ whose vertices are the vertices of $G$ and the (hyper)edges are all $A\subseteq V(G)$ such that $|A|=r+1$ and the induced subgraph $G[A]$ is connected. The (hyper)edge ideal $I_r(G)$ of $\mathrm{Con}_r(G)$ is also the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a generalisation of the independence complex of $G$, called the $r$-independence complex $\mathrm{Ind}_r(G)$. In this article we make extensive use of the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to find the graded Betti numbers of $I_r(G_1*G_2)$ in terms of the graded Betti numbers of $I_r(G_1)$ and $I_r(G_2)$, where $G_1*G_2$ is the join of $G_1$ and $G_2$. Moreover, we find formulas for all the graded Betti numbers of $I_r(G)$, when $G$ is a complete graph, complete multipartite graph, cycle graph and the wheel graph.

On the $\mathrm{v}$-number of Gorenstein ideals and Frobenius powers
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we show the equality of the (local) $\mathrm{v}$-number and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain classes of Gorenstein algebras, including the class of Gorenstein monomial algebras. Also, for the same classes of algebras with the assumption of level, we show that the (local) $\mathrm{v}$-number serves as an upper bound for the regularity. Moreover, we investigate the $\mathrm{v}$-number of Frobenius powers of graded ideals in prime characteristic setup. In this study, we demonstrate that the $\mathrm{v}$-numbers of Frobenius powers of graded ideals have an asymptotically linear behaviour. In the case of unmixed monomial ideals, we provide a method for computing the $\mathrm{v}$-number without prior knowledge of the associated primes.
Fröberg's Theorem, vertex splittability and higher independence complexes
Published in Journal of Commutative Algebra, 16(4), 391-410, 2024 • View Publication • BIB
A celebrated theorem of Fröberg gives a complete combinatorial classification of quadratic square-free monomial ideals with a linear resolution. A generalization of this theorem to higher degree square-free monomial ideals is an active area of research. The existence of a linear resolution of such ideals often depends on the field over which the polynomial ring is defined. Hence, it is too much to expect that in the higher degree case a linear resolution can be identified purely using a combinatorial feature of an associated combinatorial structure. However, some classes of ideals having linear resolutions have been identified using combinatorial structures. In the present paper, we use the notion of $r$-independence to construct an $r$-uniform hypergraph from the given graph. We then show that when the underlying graph is co-chordal, the corresponding edge ideal is vertex splittable, a condition stronger than having a linear resolution. We use this result to explicitly compute graded Betti numbers for various graph classes. Finally, we give a different proof for the existence of a linear resolution using the topological notion of $r$-collapsibility.

Modular law through GKM theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
The solution of Shareshian-Wachs conjecture by Brosnan-Chow and Guay-Paquet tied the graded chromatic symmetric functions on indifference graphs (or unit interval graphs) and the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties with the dot action. A similar result holds between unicellular LLT polynomials and twins of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. A recent result by Abreu-Nigro enabled us to prove these results by showing the modular law for the geometrical objects, and this is indeed done by Precup-Sommers and Kiem-Lee. In this paper, we give elementary and simpler proofs to the modular law through GKM theory.
