Relating three combinatorial formulas for type $A$ Whittaker functions
In this work we study the relationship between several combinatorial formulas for type $A$ spherical Whittaker functions. These are spherical functions on $p$-adic groups, which arise in the theory of automorphic forms. They depend on a parameter $t$, and are a specialization of Macdonald polynomials, and further specialize to Schur polynomials upon setting $t=0$. There are three types of formulas for these polynomials. The first formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, works in arbitrary Lie type, and is derived from the Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second one is in terms of certain fillings of Young diagrams, and is derived from, or is analogous to the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for Macdonald polynomials. The third formula is in terms of the classical semistandard Young tableaux. We study the way in which each such formula is obtained from the previous one by combining terms $-$ a phenomenon called compression. No such results existed in the case of Whittaker functions.
On Combinatorial Models for Affine Crystals
The tableau model for Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR) crystals, which are finite dimensional crystals corresponding to certain affine Lie algebras, is commonly used for its ease of crystal operator calculations. However, its simplicity makes quite complex the calculation of statistics such as: keys (used to express Demazure characters), the crystal energy function (an affine grading on tensor products of KR crystals), and the combinatorial R-matrix (an affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals). It has been shown that these calculations are much simpler with the added structure in the quantum alcove model for KR crystals. In this paper, we give an explicit description of the crystal isomorphism between the mentioned realizations of KR crystals in all classical Lie types.

We derive cancellation-free Chevalley-type multiplication formulas in the T-equivariant quantum K-theory of Grassmannians of type A and C, and also those of two-step flag manifolds of type A. They are obtained based on the uniform Chevalley formula in the T-equivariant quantum K-theory of arbitrary flag manifolds G/B, which was derived earlier in terms of the quantum alcove model, by the last three authors.

The quantum alcove model associated to a dominant weight plays an important role in many branches of mathematics, such as combinatorial representation theory, the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert calculus. For a dominant weight, it is proved by Lenart-Lubovsky that the quantum alcove model does not depend on the choice of a reduced alcove path, which is a shortest path of alcoves from the fundamental one to its translation by the given dominant weight. This is established through quantum Yang-Baxter moves, which biject the objects of the model associated with two such alcove paths, and can be viewed as a generalization of jeu de taquin slides to arbitrary root systems. The purpose of this paper is to give a generalization of quantum Yang-Baxter moves to the quantum alcove model corresponding to an arbitrary weight, which was used to express a general Chevalley formula in the equivariant $K$-group of semi-infinite flag manifolds. The generalized quantum Yang-Baxter moves give rise to a "sijection" (bijection between signed sets), and are shown to preserve certain important statistics, including weights and heights. As an application, we prove that the generating function of these statistics does not depend on the choice of a reduced alcove path. Also, we obtain an identity for the graded characters of Demazure submodules of level-zero extremal weight modules over a quantum affine algebra, which can be thought of as a representation-theoretic analogue of the mentioned Chevalley formula. Other applications and some open problems involving "signed crystals" are discussed.

This paper is a supplement to Guo-Ram arXiv:2104.02942, containing examples, remarks and additional material that could be useful to researchers working with Type $GL_n$ Macdonald polynomials. In the course of our comparison of the alcove walk formula and the nonattacking fillings formulas for type $GL_n$ Macdonald polynomials we did many examples and significant analysis of the literature. In the preparation of Guo-Ram arXiv:2104.02942 it seemed sensible to produce a document with focus and this material was removed. This is paper resurrects and organizes that material, in hopes that others may also find it useful.

The paper compares (and reproves) the alcove walk and the nonattacking fillings formulas for type $GL_n$ Macdonald polynomials which were given in Haglund-Haiman-Loehr arXiv:math.CO/0601693, Alexandersson arXiv:1602.05153 and Ram-Yip arXiv:0803.1146. The "compression" relating the two formulas in this paper is the same as that of Lenart arXiv:0804.4716. We have reformulated it so that it holds without conditions and so that the proofs of the alcove walk formula and the nonattacking fillings formula are parallel. This reformulation highlights the role of the double affine Hecke algebra and Cherednik's intertwiners. An exposition of the type $GL_n$ double affine braid group, double affine Hecke algebra, and all definitions and proofs regarding Macdonald polynomials are provided to make this paper self contained.
Postnikov-Stanley Linial arrangement conjecture

A characteristic polynomial is an important invariant in the field of hyperplane arrangement. For the Linial arrangement of any irreducible root system, Postnikov and Stanley conjectured that all roots of the characteristic polynomial have the same real part. In relation to this conjecture, Yoshinaga obtained an explicit relationship between the characteristic quasi-polynomial and the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for the fundamental alcove. In this paper, we calculate Yoshinaga's explicit formula through the decomposition of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial into several quasi-polynomials and a modified shift operator, and obtain new formulas for the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the Linial arrangement. In particular, when the parameter of the Linial arrangement is relatively prime to the period of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial, we prove the Postnikov-Stanley Linial arrangement conjecture. This generalizes some of the results for the root systems of classical types that have been proved by Postnikov-Stanley and Athanasiadis. For other cases, we verify this conjecture for exceptional root systems using a computational approach.

Let $W$ be an irreducible Weyl group and $W_a$ its affine Weyl group. In this article we show that there exists a bijection between $W_a$ and the integral points of an affine variety, denoted $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, which we call the Shi variety of $W_a$. In order to do so, we use Jian-Yi Shi's characterization of alcoves in affine Weyl groups. We then study this variety further. We highlight combinatorial properties of the irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$ and we show how they are related to a fundamental parallelepiped $P_{\mathcal{H}}$.

We give a Chevalley formula for an arbitrary weight for the torus-equivariant $K$-group of semi-infinite flag manifolds, which is expressed in terms of the quantum alcove model. As an application, we prove the Chevalley formula for an anti-dominant fundamental weight for the (small) torus-equivariant quantum $K$-theory $QK_{T}(G/B)$ of an (ordinary) flag manifold $G/B$; this has been a longstanding conjecture about the multiplicative structure of $QK_{T}(G/B)$. In type $A_{n-1}$, we prove that the so-called quantum Grothendieck polynomials indeed represent (opposite) Schubert classes in the (non-equivariant) quantum $K$-theory $QK(SL_{n}/B)$; we also obtain very explicit information about the coefficients in the respective Chevalley formula.
A combinatorial formula for Sahi, Stokman, and Venkateswaran's generalization of Macdonald polynomials

Sahi, Stokman, and Venkateswaran have constructed, for each positive integer $n$, a family of Laurent polynomials depending on parameters $q$ and $k$ (in addition to $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ "metaplectic parameters"), such that the $n=1$ case recovers the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials and the $q\rightarrow\infty$ limit yields metaplectic Iwahori-Whittaker functions with arbitrary Gauss sum parameters. In this paper, we study these new polynomials, which we call SSV polynomials, in the case of $GL_r$. We apply a result of Ram and Yip in order to give a combinatorial formula for the SSV polynomials in terms of alcove walks. The formula immediately shows that the SSV polynomials satisfy a triangularity property with respect to a version of the Bruhat order, which in turn gives an independent proof that the SSV polynomials are a basis for the space of Laurent polynomials. The result is also used to show that the SSV polynomials have \emph{fewer} terms than the corresponding Macdonald polynomials. We also record an alcove walk formula for the natural generalization of the permuted basement Macdonald polynomials. We then construct a symmetrized variant of the SSV polynomials: these are symmetric with respect to a conjugate of the Chinta-Gunnells Weyl group action and reduce to symmetric Macdonald polynomials when $n=1$. We obtain an alcove walk formula for the symmetrized polynomials as well. Finally, we calculate the $q\rightarrow 0$ and $q\rightarrow \infty$ limits of the SSV polynomials and observe that our combinatorial formula can be written in terms of alcove walks with only positive and negative folds respectively. In both of these $q$-limit cases, we also observe a positivity result for the coefficients.
Limiting directions for random walks in classical affine Weyl groups

Let $W$ be a finite Weyl group and $\widetilde W$ the corresponding affine Weyl group. A random element of $\widetilde W$ can be obtained as a reduced random walk on the alcoves of $\widetilde W$. By a theorem of Lam (Ann. Prob. 2015), such a walk almost surely approaches one of $|W|$ many directions. We compute these directions when $W$ is $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ and the random walk is weighted by Kac and dual Kac labels. This settles Lam's questions for types $B$ and $C$ in the affirmative and for type $D$ in the negative. The main tool is a combinatorial two row model for a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process called the $D^*$-TASEP, with four parameters. By specializing the parameters in different ways, we obtain TASEPs for each of the Weyl groups mentioned above. Computing certain correlations in these TASEPs gives the desired limiting directions.
Weyl chambers for short step Quarter-plane Lattice Paths
We consider four examples of short step lattice paths confined to the quarter plane. These are the Kreweras, Reverse Kreweras, Gessel, and Mishna-Rechnitzer lattice paths. The Reverse Kreweras are straightforward to solve and thus interesting as a contrast to the Kreweras paths and Gessel paths as the latter two have historically been significantly more difficult to solve. The Mishna-Rechnitzer paths are interesting as they are associated with an infinite order group. We will give some geometrical insight into all these properties by considering the Weyl chambers associated with their step sets. For Reverse Kreweras paths the Weyl chamber walls coincide with the quarter plane boundary and hence the problem is readily solvable by Bethe Ansatz or by using the Gessel-Zeilberger Theorem. For Kreweras paths the quarter plane corresponds to the union of two adjacent Weyl Chambers and hence neither the Bethe Ansatz nor the Gessel-Zeilberger Theorem are directly applicable making the problem considerably more difficult to solve. Similarly, the quarter plane for Gessel paths is the union of three Weyl chambers. For Mishna-Rechnitzer paths the step set has non-zero barycenter leading to an affine dihedral reflection group. The affine structure corresponds to the drift in the random walk. The quarter plane is the union of an infinite number of Weyl alcoves.
A gallery model for affine flag varieties via chimney retractions
This paper provides a unified combinatorial framework to study orbits in certain affine flag varieties via the associated Bruhat-Tits buildings. We first formulate, for arbitrary affine buildings, the notion of a chimney retraction. This simultaneously generalizes the two well-known notions of retractions in affine buildings: retractions from chambers at infinity and retractions from alcoves. We then present a recursive formula for computing the images of certain minimal galleries in the building under chimney retractions, using purely combinatorial tools associated to the underlying affine Weyl group. Finally, for Bruhat-Tits buildings in the function field case, we relate these retractions and their effect on minimal galleries to double coset intersections in the corresponding affine flag variety.
A Chevalley formula for semi-infinite flag manifolds and quantum K-theory (Extended abstract)
We give a combinatorial Chevalley formula for an arbitrary weight, in the torus-equivariant K-theory of semi-infinite flag manifolds, which is expressed in terms of the quantum alcove model. As an application, we prove the Chevalley formula for anti-dominant fundamental weights in the (small) torus-equivariant quantum K-theory of the flag manifold G/B; this has been a longstanding conjecture about the multiplicative structure of the mentioned quantum K-theory. Moreover, in type A, we prove that the so-called quantum Grothendieck polynomials indeed represent Schubert classes in the (non-equivariant) quantum K-theory of the corresponding flag manifold.
On Combinatorial Models for Affine Crystals
We biject two combinatorial models for tensor products of (single-column) Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals of any classical type $A-D$: the quantum alcove model and the tableau model. This allows us to translate calculations in the former model (of the energy function, the combinatorial $R$-matrix, etc.) to the latter, which is simpler.

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Weyl arrangement. We introduce and study the notion of $\mathcal{A}$-Eulerian polynomial producing an Eulerian-like polynomial for any subarrangement of $\mathcal{A}$. This polynomial together with shift operator describe how the characteristic quasi-polynomial of a new class of arrangements containing ideal subarrangements of $\mathcal{A}$ can be expressed in terms of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of the fundamental alcove. The method can also be extended to define two types of deformed Weyl subarrangements containing the families of the extended Shi, Catalan, Linial arrangements and to compute their characteristic quasi-polynomials. We obtain several known results in the literature as specializations, including the formula of the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{A}$ via Ehrhart theory due to Athanasiadis (1996), Blass-Sagan (1998), Suter (1998) and Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2010); and the formula relating the number of coweight lattice points in the fundamental parallelepiped with the Lam-Postnikov Eulerian polynomial due to the third author.

In their study of the equivariant K-theory of the generalized flag varieties $G/P$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$, Lenart and Postnikov introduced a combinatorial tool, called the alcove paths model. It provides a model for the highest weight crystals with dominant integral highest weights, generalizing the model by semistandard Young tableaux. In this paper, we prove a simple and explicit formula describing the crystal isomorphism between the alcove paths model and the Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns model for type $A$.

This is a survey on the combinatorics and geometry of integrable representations of quantum affine Lie algebras with a particular focus on level 0. Pictures and examples are included to illustrate the affine Weyl group orbits, crystal graphs and Macdonald polynomials that provide detailed understanding of the structure of the extremal weight modules and their characters. The final section surveys the alcove walk method of working with the positive level, negative level and level zero affine flag varieties and describes the corresponding actions of the affine Hecke algebra.

We use k-Schur functions to get the minimal boundary of the k-bounded partition poset. This permits to describe the central random walks on affine Grassmannian elements of type A and yields a polynomial expression for their drift. We also recover Rietsch's parametriza-tion of totally nonnegative unitriangular Toeplitz matrices without using quantum cohomology of flag varieties. All the homeomorphisms we define can moreover be made explicit by using the combinatorics of k-Schur functions and elementary computations based on Perron-Frobenius theorem.

We construct a model for $B(\infty)$ using the alcove path model of Lenart and Postnikov. We show that the continuous limit of our model recovers a dual version of the Littelmann path model for $B(\infty)$ given by Li and Zhang. Furthermore, we consider the dual version of the alcove path model and obtain analogous results for the dual model, where the continuous limit gives the Li and Zhang model.
