Communication Melting in Graphs and Complex Networks
Complex networks are the representative graphs of interactions in many complex systems. Usually, these interactions are abstractions of the communication/diffusion channels between the units of the system. Real complex networks, e.g. traffic networks, reveal different operation phases governed by the dynamical stress of the system. Here we show how, communicability, a topological descriptor that reveals the efficiency of the network functionality in terms of these diffusive paths, could be used to reveal the transitions mentioned. By considering a vibrational model of nodes and edges in a graph/network at a given temperature (stress), we show that the communicability function plays the role of the thermal Green's function of a network of harmonic oscillators. After, we prove analytically the existence of a universal phase transition in the communicability structure of every simple graph. This transition resembles the melting process occurring in solids. For instance, regular-like graphs resembling crystals, melts at lower temperatures and display a sharper transition between connected to disconnected structures than the random spatial graphs, which resemble amorphous solids. Finally, we study computationally this graph melting process in some real-world networks and observe that the rate of melting of graphs changes either as an exponential or as a power-law with the inverse temperature. At the local level we discover that the main driver for node melting is the eigenvector centrality of the corresponding node, particularly when the critical value of the inverse temperature approaches zero. These universal results sheds light on many dynamical diffusive-like processes on networks that present transitions as traffic jams, communication lost or failure cascades.

Generalized nil-Coxeter algebras
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 80B (2018), Article #29 • Search Publication
Motivated by work of Coxeter (1957), we study a class of algebras associated to Coxeter groups, which we term 'generalized nil-Coxeter algebras'. We construct the first finite-dimensional examples other than usual nil-Coxeter algebras; these form a $2$-parameter type $A$ family that we term $NC_A(n,d)$. We explore the combinatorial properties of these algebras, including the Coxeter word basis, length function, maximal words, and their connection to Khovanov's categorification of the Weyl algebra. Our broader motivation arises from complex reflection groups and the Broue-Malle-Rouquier freeness conjecture (1998). With generic Hecke algebras over real and complex groups in mind, we show that the 'first' finite-dimensional examples $NC_A(n,d)$ are in fact the only ones, outside of the usual nil-Coxeter algebras. The proofs use a diagrammatic calculus akin to crystal theory.

Crystal graphs for shifted tableaux
We define crystal operators on semistandard shifted tableaux, giving a new proof that Schur $P$-functions are Schur positive. We define a queer crystal operator to construct a connected queer crystal on semistandard shifted tableaux of a given shape, providing a new proof that products of Schur $P$-functions are Schur $P$-positive. We also give a rectification map from shifted tableaux to Young tableaux that commutes with the crystal operators and provides a dual algorithm to shifted insertion.

Generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for branching rules of GL(n) and extremal weight crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Following the methods used by Derksen-Weyman in \cite{DW11} and Chindris in \cite{Chi08}, we use quiver theory to represent the generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the branching rule for the diagonal embedding of $\gl(n)$ as the dimension of a weight space of semi-invariants. Using this, we prove their saturation and investigate when they are nonzero. We also show that for certain partitions the associated stretched polynomials satisfy the same conjectures as single Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We then provide a polytopal description of this multiplicity and show that its positivity may be computed in strongly polynomial time. Finally, we remark that similar results hold for certain other generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Shifted tableaux crystals
We introduce coplactic raising and lowering operators $E'_i$, $F'_i$, $E_i$, and $F_i$ on shifted skew semistandard tableaux. We show that the primed operators and unprimed operators each independently form type A Kashiwara crystals (but not Stembridge crystals) on the same underlying set and with the same weight functions. When taken together, the result is a new kind of `doubled crystal' structure that recovers the combinatorics of type B Schubert calculus: the highest-weight elements of our crystals are precisely the shifted Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, and their generating functions are the (skew) Schur $Q$-functions. We give local axioms for these crystals, which closely resemble the Stembridge axioms for type A. Finally, we give a new criterion for such tableaux to be ballot.

The geometric $R$-matrix for affine crystals of type $A$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [Frieden, arXiv:1706.02844], we constructed a geometric crystal on the variety $\mathbb{X}_{k} := {\rm Gr}(k,n) \times \mathbb{C}^\times$ which tropicalizes to the affine crystal structure on rectangular tableaux with $n-k$ rows. In this sequel, we define and study the geometric $R$-matrix, a birational map $R : \mathbb{X}_{k_1} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \rightarrow \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_1}$ which tropicalizes to the combinatorial $R$-matrix on pairs of rectangular tableaux. We show that $R$ is an isomorphism of geometric crystals, and that it satisfies the Yang--Baxter relation. In the case where both tableaux have one row, we recover a birational action of the symmetric group that has appeared in the literature in a number of contexts. We also define a rational function $E : \mathbb{X}_{k_1} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ which tropicalizes to the coenergy function from affine crystal theory. Most of the properties of the geometric $R$-matrix follow from the fact that it gives the unique solution to a certain equation of matrices in the loop group ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C}(λ))$.

Colorful combinatorics and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The non-negative integer cocharge statistic on words was introduced in the 1970's by Lascoux and Schützenberger to combinatorially characterize the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Cocharge has since been used to explain phenomena ranging from the graded decomposition of Garsia-Procesi modules to the cohomology structure of the Grassman variety. Although its application to contemporary variations of these problems had been deemed intractable, we prove that the two-parameter, symmetric Macdonald polynomials are generating functions of a distinguished family of colored words. Cocharge adorns one parameter and the second measures its deviation from cocharge on words without color. We use the same framework to expand the plactic monoid, apply Kashiwara's crystal theory to various Garsia-Haiman modules, and to address problems in K-theoretic Schubert calculus.

$R$-systems

Birational toggling on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns appeared first in the study of geometric crystals and geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. Based on these birational toggle relations, Einstein and Propp introduced a discrete dynamical system called birational rowmotion associated with a partially ordered set. We generalize birational rowmotion to the class of arbitrary strongly connected directed graphs, calling the resulting discrete dynamical system the $R$-system. We study its integrability from the points of view of singularity confinement and algebraic entropy. We show that in many cases, singularity confinement in an $R$-system reduces to the Laurent phenomenon either in a cluster algebra, or in a Laurent phenomenon algebra, or beyond both of those generalities, giving rise to many new sequences with the Laurent property possessing rich groups of symmetries. Some special cases of $R$-systems reduce to Somos and Gale-Robinson sequences.

PBW bases and marginally large tableaux in types B and C
Published in Canad. Math. Bull. 62 (2019), no. 1, 37-54 • View PublicationBIB
We explicitly describe the isomorphism between two combinatorial realizations of Kashiwara's infinity crystal in types B and C. The first realization is in terms of marginally large tableaux and the other is in terms of Kostant partitions coming from PBW bases. We also discuss a stack notation for Kostant partitions which simplifies that realization.

A minimaj-preserving crystal on ordered multiset partitions
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 95 (2018) 96-115 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a crystal structure on the set of ordered multiset partitions, which recently arose in the pursuit of the Delta Conjecture. This conjecture was stated by Haglund, Remmel and Wilson as a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture. Various statistics on ordered multiset partitions arise in the combinatorial analysis of the Delta Conjecture, one of them being the minimaj statistic, which is a variant of the major index statistic on words. Our crystal has the property that the minimaj statistic is constant on connected components of the crystal. In particular, this yields another proof of the Schur positivity of the graded Frobenius series of the generalization $R_{n,k}$ due to Haglund, Rhoades and Shimozono of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$. The crystal structure also enables us to demonstrate the equidistributivity of the minimaj statistic with the major index statistic on ordered multiset partitions.

Rigged configuration bijection and proof of the $X=M$ conjecture for nonexceptional affine types
Published in J. Algebra, 516 (2018), pp. 1--37 • View PublicationBIB
We establish a bijection between rigged configurations and highest weight elements of a tensor product of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals for all nonexceptional types. A key idea for the proof is to embed both objects into bigger sets for simply-laced types $A_n^{(1)}$ or $D_n^{(1)}$, whose bijections have already been established. As a consequence we settle the $X=M$ conjecture in full generality for nonexceptional types. Furthermore, the bijection extends to a classical crystal isomorphism and sends the combinatorial $R$-matrix to the identity map on rigged configurations.

Combinatorics of generalized exponents
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a purely combinatorial proof of the positivity of the stabilized forms of the generalized exponents associated to each classical root system. In finite type A_{n-1}, we rederive the description of the generalized exponents in terms of crystal graphs without using the combinatorics of semistandard tableaux or the charge statistic. In finite type C_n, we obtain a combinatorial description of the generalized exponents based on the so-called distinguished vertices in crystals of type A_{2n-1}, which we also connect to symplectic King tableaux. This gives a combinatorial proof of the positivity of Lusztig t-analogues associated to zero weight spaces in the irreducible representations of symplectic Lie algebras. We also present three applications of our combinatorial formula, and discuss some implications to relating two type C branching rules. Our methods are expected to extend to the orthogonal types.

We give a new characterization of Littlewood-Richardson-Stembridge tableaux for Schur $P$-functions by using the theory of $\mf{q}(n)$-crystals. We also give alternate proofs of the Schur $P$-expansion of a skew Schur function due to Ardila and Serrano, and the Schur expansion of a Schur $P$-function due to Stembridge using the associated crystal structures.

Growth Diagrams and Minuscule Polygon Configurations in the Affine Grassmannian
We define affine growth diagrams consisting of $GL_m$ dominant weights that label the vertices of a staircase-shaped grid. These are also called cylindrical growth diagrams as defined by Speyer and White in the case of partitions. The weights labelling each adjacent pair of vertices differ by a vertical strip and the weights around each unit square satisfy a local condition that appeared in van Leeuwen's work on the Littelmann path model for crystals. We prove two main results. For a sequence of minuscule weights $\vecλ=(λ^1,\ldots,λ^n)$ let Poly$(\vecλ)$ denote the configuration space of $n$-tuples of points $(g_1,\ldots,g_n)$ in the affine Grassmannian such that the weight-valued distances satisfy $d(g_i,g_{i+1})=λ^i$. This is the convolution variety arising in the geometric Satake correspondence. We show that for a generic point $(g_1,\ldots,g_n)$ of a component the distances $d(g_i,g_j)$ form an affine growth diagram and that this gives a bijection between components of Poly$(\vecλ)$ and affine growth diagrams of type $\vecλ$. The main tool used in the proof is the Knutson--Tao hive. In the second part, we give a purely combinatorial construction of affine growth diagrams from natural number entries by applying Greene's theorem to certain subrectangles of the staircase. From this construction it follows that affine growth diagrams contain the classical Fomin growth diagrams and realize the RS-correspondence when $\vecλ=(ω_1,\ldots,ω_1,ω_1^*,\ldots,ω_1^*)$.

Affine Type $A$ Geometric Crystal on the Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ geometric crystal on the variety ${\rm Gr}(k,n) \times \mathbb{C}^\times$, and show that it tropicalizes to the disjoint union of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals corresponding to rectangular tableaux with $n-k$ rows. A key ingredient in our construction is the $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ symmetry on the Grassmannian coming from cyclically shifting the basis of the underlying vector space. We show that a twisted version of this symmetry tropicalizes to combinatorial promotion. Additionally, we use the loop group ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C}(λ))$ to define a unipotent crystal which induces our geometric crystal. We use this unipotent crystal to study the geometric analogues of two symmetries of rectangular tableaux.

A Demazure crystal construction for Schubert polynomials
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 1(2) (2018) 225-247 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley symmetric functions are the stable limits of Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we show that, conversely, Schubert polynomials are Demazure truncations of Stanley symmetric functions. This parallels the relationship between Schur functions and Demazure characters for the general linear group. We establish this connection by imposing a Demazure crystal structure on key tableaux, recently introduced by the first author in connection with Demazure characters and Schubert polynomials, and linking this to the type A crystal structure on reduced word factorizations, recently introduced by Morse and the second author in connection with Stanley symmetric functions.

Coboundary categories and local rules
Published • View PublicationBIB
First we develop the theory of local rules for coboundary categories. Then we describe the local rules in two main cases. First for the quantum groups in general and in the seminormal representations of the Hecke algebras. Then for crystals in general and specifically for crystals of minuscule representations. Finally we show how growth diagrams can be extended to construct the action of the cactus group on highest weight words.
