Subdivisions of Hypersimplices: with a View Toward Finite Metric Spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
The secondary fan $Σ(k,n)$ is a polyhedral fan which stratifies the regular subdivisions of the hypersimplices $Δ(k,n)$. We find new infinite families of rays of $Σ(k,n)$, and we compute the fans $Σ(2,7)$ and $Σ(3,6)$. In the special case $k=2$ the fan $Σ(2,n)$ is closely related to the metric fan $\mathop{MF}(n)$, which forms a natural parameter space for the metric spaces on $n$ points. So our results yield a classification of the finite metric spaces on seven points.

A Conditional Extension of the Park-Pham Theorem
Neglecting many motivating details for the Park-Pham theorem (previously known as the Kahn-Kalai conjecture), the result starts with a finite set $X$, a non-trivial upper set $\mathcal{F} \subseteq 2^X$, and a particular parameterized family of random variables $X_p$, then proceeds to provide an upper bound on the value $p_c(\mathcal{F})$ such that $\mathbb{P}(X_{p_c(\mathcal{F})} \in \mathcal{F}) = 1/2$. A natural question to ask is if there is an analog to the Park-Pham theorem for upper sets in finite posets other than $2^X$ and other parameterized families of random variables taking values in them. In this short note, we show that there is, with minor adjustments, in at least one circumstance. This is done by producing a conditional version of the $ε$-dependent form of the Park-Pham theorem, which has practical implications for the study of large neural networks and may also be interesting in its own right.

Logarithmic concavity of bimatroids
A bimatroid is a matroid-like generalization of the collection of regular minors of a matrix. In this article, we use the theory of Lorentzian polynomials to study the logarithmic concavity of natural sequences associated to bimatroids. Bimatroids can be used to characterize morphisms of matroids and this observation (originally due to Kung) allows us to prove a weak version of logarithmic concavity of the number of bases of a morphism of matroids. This is weaker than the original result by Eur and Huh; it nevertheless provides us with a new perspective on Mason's log-concavity conjecture for independent sets of matroids. We finally show that for realizable bimatroids, the regular minor polynomial is a volume polynomial. Applied to morphisms of matroids, this shows that the weak basis generating polynomial of a morphism is a volume polynomial; this confirms a conjecture of Eur--Huh for morphisms of nullity $\leq 1$ and gives an algebro-geometric explanation for Mason's log-concavity conjecture in the realizable case.

The sandpile model on the complete split graph: $q,t$-Schröder polynomials, sawtooth polyominoes, and a cycle lemma
This paper studies sorted recurrent configurations of the Abelian sandpile model on the complete split graph. We introduce two natural toppling processes, CTI and ITC toppling, on the recurrent configurations and use these to define two toppling delay statistics, wtopple$_{CTI}$ and wtopple$_{ITC}$. These new toppling delay statistics are time-weighted sums for the number of vertices that topple during each iteration of the toppling processes. We then introduce the bivariate $q,t$-CTI and $q,t$-ITC polynomials that are the generating functions of the bistatistics (level,wtopple$_{ITC}$) and (level,wtopple$_{CTI}$), where level is the well-established sandpile level statistic. We prove the bistatistic (level,wtopple$_{ITC}$) maps to a bistatistic (area, bounce) on Schröder paths that was introduced by Egge, Haglund, Killpatrick and Kremer (2003). This establishes equality of the $q,t$-ITC polynomial and the $q,t$-Schröder polynomial of those same authors. This connection allows us to relate the $q,t$-ITC polynomial to the theory of symmetric functions and also establishes symmetry of the $q,t$-ITC polynomials. We conjecture equality of the $q,t$-CTI and $q,t$-ITC polynomials. We also present and prove a characterization of sorted recurrent configurations as a new class of polyominoes that we call sawtooth polyominoes. The CTI and ITC toppling processes on sorted recurrent configurations are proven to correspond to bounce paths within the polyominoes. The main difference between the two bounce paths is the initial direction in which they travel. In addition to this, and building on the results of Aval, D'Adderio, Dukes, and Le Borgne (2016), we present a cycle lemma for a slight extension of stable configurations that allows for an enumeration of sorted recurrent configurations within the framework of the sandpile model.

Any two-coloring of the plane contains monochromatic 3-term arithmetic progressions
Published in Combinatorica 44 (2024), no. 6, 1367-1380 • View Publication • BIB
A conjecture of Erdős, Graham, Montgomery, Rothschild, Spencer and Straus states that, with the exception of equilateral triangles, any two-coloring of the plane will have a monochromatic congruent copy of every three-point configuration. This conjecture is known only for special classes of configurations. In this manuscript, we confirm one of the most natural open cases; that is, every two-coloring of the plane admits a monochromatic congruent copy of any $3$-term arithmetic progression.

Differential equations for the series of hypermaps with control on their full degree profile
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the generating series of oriented and non-oriented hypermaps with controlled degrees of vertices, hyperedges and faces. It is well known that these series have natural expansions in terms of Schur and Zonal symmetric functions, and with some particular specializations, they satisfy the celebrated KP and BKP equations. We prove that the full generating series of hypermaps satisfy a family of differential equations. We give a first proof which works for an $α$ deformation of these series related to Jack polynomials. This proof is based on a recent construction formula for Jack characters using differential operators. We also provide a combinatorial proof for the orientable case. Our approach also applies to the series of $k$-constellations with control of the degrees of vertices of all colors. In other words, we obtain an equation for the generating function of Hurwitz numbers (and their $α$-deformations) with control of full ramification profiles above an arbitrary number of points. Such equations are new even in the orientable case.

Crossing number of graphs and $\mathsf{ΔY}$-move
The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of double points over all generic immersions of the graph into the plane. In this paper we investigate the behavior of crossing number under a graph transformation, called $\mathsf{ΔY}$-move, on the complete graph $K_n$. Concretely it is shown that for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$, there exist a natural number $n$ and a sequence of $\mathsf{ΔY}$-moves $K_n\rightarrow G^{(1)}\rightarrow \cdots \rightarrow G^{(k)}$ which is decreasing with respect to the crossing number. We also discuss the decrease of crossing number for relatively small $n$.

Mallows Product Measure
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 29: 1-33 (2024) • View Publication • BIB
Q-exchangeable ergodic distributions on the infinite symmetric group were classified by Gnedin-Olshanski (2012). In this paper, we study a specific linear combination of the ergodic measures and call it the Mallows product measure. From a particle system perspective, the Mallows product measure is a reversible stationary blocking measure of the infinite-species ASEP and it is a natural multi-species extension of the Bernoulli product blocking measures of the one-species ASEP. Moreover, the Mallows product measure can be viewed as the universal product blocking measure of interacting particle systems coming from random walks on Hecke algebras. For the random infinite permutation distributed according to the Mallows product measure we have computed the joint distribution of its neighboring displacements, as well as several other observables. The key feature of the obtained formulas is their remarkably simple product structure. We project these formulas to ASEP with finitely many species, which in particular recovers a recent result of Adams-Balazs-Jay, and also to ASEP(q,M). Our main tools are results of Gnedin-Olshanski about ergodic Mallows measures and shift-invariance symmetries of the stochastic colored six vertex model discovered by Borodin-Gorin-Wheeler and Galashin.

Enumeration of multiplex juggling card sequences using generalized q-derivatives
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 6:2 (2026) Article S2R12 • View Publication • BIB
In 2019, Butler, Choi, Kim, and Seo introduced a new type of juggling card that represents multiplex juggling patterns in a natural bijective way. They conjectured a formula for the generating function for the number of multiplex juggling cards with capacity 2. In this paper we prove their conjecture. More generally, we find an explicit formula for the generating function with any capacity. We also find an expression for the generating function for multiplex juggling card sequences by introducing a generalization of the q-derivative operator. As a consequence, we show that this generating function is a rational function.

An Algorithmic Meta Theorem for Homomorphism Indistinguishability
Two graphs $G$ and $H$ are homomorphism indistinguishable over a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ if for all graphs $F \in \mathcal{F}$ the number of homomorphisms from $F$ to $G$ is equal to the number of homomorphism from $F$ to $H$. Many natural equivalence relations comparing graphs such as (quantum) isomorphism, cospectrality, and logical equivalences can be characterised as homomorphism indistinguishability relations over various graph classes. For a fixed graph class $\mathcal{F}$, the decision problem HomInd($\mathcal{F}$) asks to determine whether two input graphs $G$ and $H$ are homomorphism indistinguishable over $\mathcal{F}$. The problem HomInd($\mathcal{F}$) is known to be decidable only for few graph classes $\mathcal{F}$. We show that HomInd($\mathcal{F}$) admits a randomised polynomial-time algorithm for every graph class $\mathcal{F}$ of bounded treewidth which is definable in counting monadic second-order logic CMSO2. Thereby, we give the first general algorithm for deciding homomorphism indistinguishability. This result extends to a version of HomInd where the graph class $\mathcal{F}$ is specified by a CMSO2-sentence and a bound $k$ on the treewidth, which are given as input. For fixed $k$, this problem is randomised fixed-parameter tractable. If $k$ is part of the input then it is coNP- and coW[1]-hard. Addressing a problem posed by Berkholz (2012), we show coNP-hardness by establishing that deciding indistinguishability under the $k$-dimensional Weisfeiler--Leman algorithm is coNP-hard when $k$ is part of the input.

Consecutive Power Occurrences in Sturmian Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that every Sturmian word has the property that the distance between consecutive ending positions of cubes occurring in the word is always bounded by $10$ and this bound is optimal, extending a result of Rampersad, who proved that the bound $9$ holds for the Fibonacci word. We then give a general result showing that for every $e \in [1,(5+\sqrt{5})/2)$ there is a natural number $N$, depending only on $e$, such that every Sturmian word has the property that the distance between consecutive ending positions of $e$-powers occurring in the word is uniformly bounded by $N$.

Finding product sets in some classes of amenable groups
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e10 • View Publication • BIB
In 2022, using methods from ergodic theory, Kra, Moreira, Richter, and Robertson resolved a longstanding conjecture of Erdős about sumsets in large subsets of the natural numbers. In this paper, we extend this result to several important classes of amenable groups, including all finitely generated virtually nilpotent groups, and all abelian groups $(G,+)$ with the property that the subgroup $2G := \{g+g : g\in G\}$ has finite index. We prove that in any group $G$ from the above classes, any $A\subset G$ with positive upper Banach density contains a shifted product set of the form $\{tb_ib_j\colon i<j\}$, for some infinite sequence $(b_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ and some $t\in G$. In fact, we show this result for all amenable groups that posses a property which we call square absolute continuity. Our results provide answers to several questions and conjectures posed in a recent survey of Kra, Moreira, Richter and Robertson.
q-Parikh Matrices and q-deformed binomial coefficients of words
Published • View Publication • BIB
We have introduced a q-deformation, i.e., a polynomial in q with natural coefficients, of the binomial coefficient of two finite words u and v counting the number of occurrences of v as a subword of u. In this paper, we examine the q-deformation of Parikh matrices as introduced by Eğecioğlu in 2004. Many classical results concerning Parikh matrices generalize to this new framework: Our first important observation is that the elements of such a matrix are in fact q-deformations of binomial coefficients of words. We also study their inverses and as an application, we obtain new identities about q-binomials. For a finite word z and for the sequence $(p_n)_{n\ge 0}$ of prefixes of an infinite word, we show that the polynomial sequence $\binom{p_n}{z}_q$ converges to a formal series. We present links with additive number theory and k-regular sequences. In the case of a periodic word $u^ω$, we generalize a result of Salomaa: the sequence $\binom{u^n}{z}_q$ satisfies a linear recurrence relation with polynomial coefficients. Related to the theory of integer partition, we describe the growth and the zero set of the coefficients of the series associated with $u^ω$. Finally, we show that the minors of a q-Parikh matrix are polynomials with natural coefficients and consider a generalization of Cauchy's inequality. We also compare q-Parikh matrices associated with an arbitrary word with those associated with a canonical word $12\cdots k$ made of pairwise distinct symbols.

Shellable slices of hyperbolic polynomials and the degree principle
We study a natural stratification of certain affine slices of univariate hyperbolic polynomials. We look into which posets of strata can be realized and show that the dual of the poset of strata is a shellable simplicial complex and in particular a combinatorial sphere. From this we obtain a g-theorem and an upper bound theorem on the number of strata. We use these results to design smaller test sets to improve upon Timofte's degree principle and give bounds on how much the degree principle can be improved.

Cyclic sieving on noncrossing (1,2)-configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Verifying a suspicion of Propp and Reiner concerning the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP), M. Thiel introduced a Catalan object called noncrossing $(1,2)$-configurations (denoted by $X_n$), which is a class of set partitions of $[n-1]$. More precisely, Thiel proved that, with a natural action of the cyclic group $C_{n-1}$ on $X_n$, the triple $\left(X_n,C_{n-1},\text{Cat}_n(q)\right)$ exhibits the CSP, where $\text{Cat}_n(q):=\frac{1}{[n+1]_q}\begin{bmatrix} 2n\\ n \end{bmatrix}_q$ is MacMahon's $q$-Catalan number. Recently, in a study of the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring $FDR_n$, J. Kim found a combinatorial basis for $FDR_n$ indexed by $X_n$. In this paper, we continue to study $X_n$ and obtain the following results: (1) We define a statistic $cwt$ on $X_n$ whose generating function is $\text{Cat}_n(q)$, which answers a problem of Thiel. (2) We show that $\text{Cat}_n(q)$ is equivalent to $$\sum_{\substack{k,x,y\\2k+x+y=n-1}}\begin{bmatrix} n-1 2k,x,y \end{bmatrix}_q\text{Cat}_k (q)q^{k+\binom{x}{2}+\binom{y}{2}+\binom{n}{2}}$$ modulo $q^{n-1}-1$, which answers a problem of Kim. As mentioned by Kim, this result leads to a representation theoretic proof of the above cyclic sieving result of Thiel. (3) We consider the dihedral sieving, a generalization of the CSP, which was recently introduced by Rao and Suk. Under a natural action of the dihedral group $I_2(n-1)$ (for even $n$), we prove a dihedral sieving result on $X_n$.

Random choice spanning trees
In this paper we introduce a new model of random spanning trees that we call choice spanning trees, constructed from so-called choice random walks. These are random walks for which each step is chosen from a subset of random options, according to some pre-defined rule. The choice spanning trees are constructed by running a choice modified version of Wilson's algorithm or the Aldous-Broder algorithm on the complete graph. We show that the scaling limits of these choice spanning trees are slight variants of random aggregation trees previously considered by Curien and Haas (2017). Moreover, we show that the loop-erasure of a choice random walk run on the complete graph converges after rescaling to a generalized Rayleigh process, extending a result of Evans, Pitman and Winter (2006). These are all natural extensions of similar results for uniform spanning trees.

Hyperoctahedral group characters and a type-BC analog of graph coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
We state combinatorial formulas for hyperoctahedral group ($\mathfrak B_n$) character evaluations of the form $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$, where ${{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1) \in \Bbb Z[\mathfrak B_n]$ is a type-BC Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element, with $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ corresponding to simultaneously smooth type-B and C Schubert varieties. We also extend the definition of symmetric group codominance to elements of $\mathfrak B_n$ and show that for each element $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ above, there exists a BC-codominant element $v \in \mathfrak B_n$ satisfying $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1)) = χ( {{\widetilde C}_v}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for all $\mathfrak B_n$-characters $χ$. Combinatorial structures and maps appearing in these formulas are type-BC extensions of planar networks, unit interval orders, indifference graphs, poset tableaux, and colorings. Using the ring of type-BC symmetric functions, we introduce natural generating functions $Y( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for the above evaluations. These provide a new type-BC analog of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions [Adv. Math. 111 (1995) pp. 166-194].

Cluster parking functions
Published in Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. Simon Stevin 32(1): 1-44 (April 2025) • View Publication • BIB
The cluster complex on one hand, parking functions on the other hand, are two combinatorial (po)sets that can be associated to a finite real reflection group. Cluster parking functions are obtained by taking an appropriate fiber product (over noncrossing partitions). There is a natural structure of simplicial complex on these objects, and our main goal is to show that it has the homotopy type of a (pure) wedge of spheres. The unique nonzero homology group (as a representation of the underlying reflection group) is a sign-twisted parking representation, which is the same as Gordon's quotient of diagonal coinvariants. Along the way, we prove some properties of the poset of parking functions. We also provide a long list of remaining open problems.

An approximation of the Collatz map and a lower bound for the average total stopping time
Define the map $\mathsf{T}$ on the positive integers by $\mathsf{T}(m)=\frac{m}{2}$ if $m$ is even and by $\mathsf{T}(m)=\frac{3m+1}{2}$ if $m$ is odd. Results of Terras and Everett imply that, given any $ε>0$, almost all $m\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ (in the sense of natural density) fulfill $(\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2})^km^{1-ε}\leq \mathsf{T}^k(m)\leq (\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2})^km^{1+ε}$ simultaneously for all $0\leq k\leq α\log m$ with $α=(\log 2)^{-1}\approx 1.443$. We extend this result to $α=2(\log\frac{4}{3})^{-1}\approx 6.952$, which is the maximally possible value. Set $\mathsf{T}_{\min}(m):=\min_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\mathsf{T}^n(m)$. As an immediate consequence, one has $\mathsf{T}_{\min}(m)\leq\mathsf{T}^{\left\lfloor2(\log\frac{4}{3})^{-1}\log m\right\rfloor}(m)\leq m^ε$ for almost all $m\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ for any given $ε>0$. Previously, Korec has shown that $\mathsf{T}_{\min}(m)\leq m^ε$ for almost all $m\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ if $ε>\frac{\log3}{\log4}$, and recently Tao proved that $\mathsf{T}_{\min}(m)\leq f(m)$ for almost all $m\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ (in the sense of logarithmic density) for all functions $f$ diverging to $\infty$. Denote by $τ(m)$ the minimal $n\in\mathbb{N}$ for which $\mathsf{T}^n(m)=1$ if there exists such an $n$ and set $τ(m)=\infty$ otherwise. As another application, we show that $\liminf_{x\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{x\log x}\sum_{m=1}^{\lfloor x\rfloor}τ(m)\geq 2(\log\frac{4}{3})^{-1}$, partially answering a question of Crandall and Shanks. Under the assumption that the Collatz Conjecture is true in the strong sense that $τ(m)$ is in $O(\log m)$, we show that $\lim_{x\rightarrow\infty}\frac{1}{x\log x}\sum_{m=1}^{\lfloor x\rfloor}τ(m)= 2(\log\frac{4}{3})^{-1}$.

Associahedra as moment polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalized associahedra are a well-studied family of polytopes associated to a finite-type cluster algebra and choice of starting cluster. We show that the generalized associahedra constructed by Padrol, Palu, Pilaud, and Plamondon, building on ideas from Arkani-Hamed, Bai, He, and Yan, can be naturally viewed as moment polytopes for an open patch of the quotient of the cluster A-variety with universal coefficients by its maximal natural torus action. We prove our result by showing that the construction of Padrol, Palu, Pilaud, and Plamondon can be understood on the basis of the way that moment polytopes behave under symplectic reduction.
