A cornucopia of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux and refine standard Young tableaux. They are closely tied to the descent set of standard Young tableaux and were introduced by Assaf and Searles to tighten Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur functions. The descent set and descent statistic of standard Young tableaux repeatedly prove themselves useful to consider, and as a result, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux make appearances in many ways outside of their original purpose. Some examples, which we present in this paper, include the Schur expansion of Jack polynomials, the decomposition of Foulkes characters, and the bigraded Frobenius image of the coinvariant algebra. While it would be nice to have a product formula enumeration of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux in the way that semistandard and standard Young tableaux do, it has previously been shown by the author that there is little hope on that front. The goal of this paper is to address a handful of the numerous alternative enumerative approaches. In particular, we present enumerations of quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux using $q$-hit numbers, semistandard Young tableaux, weighted lattice paths, and symmetric polynomials, as well as the fundamental quasisymmetric and monomial quasisymmetric expansions of their Schur generating function.

Proof of a Conjecture of Reiner-Tenner-Yong on Barely Set-valued Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of a barely set-valued semistandard Young tableau was introduced by Reiner, Tenner and Yong in their study of the probability distribution of edges in the Young lattice of partitions. Given a partition $λ$ and a positive integer $k$, let ${\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)$ (respectively, ${\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)$) denote the set of barely set-valued semistandard Young tableaux (respectively, ordinary semistandard Young tableaux) of shape $λ$ with entries in row $i$ not exceeding $k+i$. In the case when $λ$ is a rectangular staircase partition $δ_d(b^a)$, Reiner, Tenner and Yong conjectured that $|{\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)|= \frac{kab(d-1)}{(a+b)} |{\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)|$. In this paper, we establish a connection between barely set-valued tableaux and reverse plane partitions with designated corners. We show that for any shape $λ$, the expected jaggedness of a subshape of $λ$ under the weak probability distribution can be expressed as $\frac{2|{\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)|} {k|{\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)|}$. On the other hand, when $λ$ is a balanced shape with $r$ rows and $c$ columns, Chan, Haddadan, Hopkins and Moci proved that the expected jaggedness of a subshape in $λ$ under the weak distribution equals $2rc/(r+c)$. Hence, for a balanced shape $λ$ with $r$ rows and $c$ columns, we establish the relation that $|{\mathrm{BSSYT}}(λ,k)|=\frac{krc}{(r+c)}|{\mathrm{SYT}}(λ,k)|$. Since a rectangular staircase shape $δ_d(b^a)$ is a balanced shape, we confirm the conjecture of Reiner, Tenner and Yong.

Sign matrix polytopes from Young tableaux
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 574 (2019), 84-122 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the study of polytopes formed as the convex hull of permutation matrices and alternating sign matrices, we define several new families of polytopes as convex hulls of sign matrices, which are certain {0,1,-1}-matrices in bijection with semistandard Young tableaux. We investigate various properties of these polytopes, including their inequality descriptions, vertices, facets, and face lattices, as well as connections to alternating sign matrix polytopes and transportation polytopes.

Pattern Avoidance of Generalized Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $π$ is independent of the choice of $π\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Analogous to Lewis's method, we establish a bijection from generalized permutations to rectangular semistandard Young tableaux which will recover several known results in the literature.

Lecture hall tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce lecture hall tableaux, which are fillings of a skew Young diagram satisfying certain conditions. Lecture hall tableaux generalize both lecture hall partitions and anti-lecture hall compositions, and also contain reverse semistandard Young tableaux as a limit case. We show that the coefficients in the Schur expansion of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials are generating functions for lecture hall tableaux. Using a Selberg-type integral we show that moments of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials, which are equal to generating functions for lecture hall tableaux of a Young diagram, have a product formula. We also explore various combinatorial properties of lecture hall tableaux.

Proof of a conjecture of Morales-Pak-Panova on reverse plane partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using equivariant cohomology theory, Naruse obtained a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/μ$. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula respectively by counting semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ and reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/μ$. When $λ$ and $μ$ are both staircase shape partitions, Morales, Pak and Panova conjectured that the generating function of reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/ μ$ can be expressed as a determinant whose entries are related to $q$-analogues of the Euler numbers. The objective of this paper is to prove this conjecture.
Reverse plane partitions of skew staircase shapes and $q$-Euler numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Naruse discovered a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogs of Naruse's hook length formula over semistandard Young tableaux (SSYTs) and reverse plane partitions (RPPs). As an application of their formula, they expressed certain $q$-Euler numbers, which are generating functions for SSYTs and RPPs of a zigzag border strip, in terms of weighted Dyck paths. They found a determinantal formula for the generating function for SSYTs of a skew staircase shape and proposed two conjectures related to RPPs of the same shape. One conjecture is a determinantal formula for the number of \emph{pleasant diagrams} in terms of Schröder paths and the other conjecture is a determinantal formula for the generating function for RPPs of a skew staircase shape in terms of $q$-Euler numbers. In this paper, we show that the results of Morales, Pak and Panova on the $q$-Euler numbers can be derived from previously known results due to Prodinger by manipulating continued fractions. These $q$-Euler numbers are naturally expressed as generating functions for alternating permutations with certain statistics involving \emph{maj}. It has been proved by Huber and Yee that these $q$-Euler numbers are generating functions for alternating permutations with certain statistics involving \emph{inv}. By modifying Foata's bijection we construct a bijection on alternating permutations which sends the statistics involving \emph{maj} to the statistic involving \emph{inv}. We also prove the aforementioned two conjectures of Morales, Pak and Panova.

Convexity of tableau sets for type A Demazure characters (key polynomials), parabolic Catalan numbers
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 20 no. 2, Combinatorics (August 16, 2018) dmtcs:4158 • View PublicationBIB
This is the first of three papers that develop structures which are counted by a "parabolic" generalization of Catalan numbers. Fix a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Consider the ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes are determined by R. These are the "inverses" of (parabolic) multipermutations whose multiplicities are determined by R. The standard forms of the ordered partitions are refered to as "R-permutations". The notion of 312-avoidance is extended from permutations to R-permutations. Let lambda be a partition of N such that the set of column lengths in its shape is R or R union {n}. Fix an R-permutation pi. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial) in x_1, .., x_n that is indexed by lambda and pi can be described as the sum of the weight monomials for some of the semistandard Young tableau of shape lambda that are used to describe the Schur function indexed by lambda. Descriptions of these "Demazure" tableaux developed by the authors in earlier papers are used to prove that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is R-312-avoiding if and only if the tableau set is the entire principal ideal generated by the key of pi. These papers were inspired by results of Reiner and Shimozono and by Postnikov and Stanley concerning coincidences between Demazure characters and flagged Schur functions. This convexity result is used in the next paper to deepen those results from the level of polynomials to the level of tableau sets. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of R-312-avoiding permutations. These special R-permutations are reformulated as "R-rightmost clump deleting" chains of subsets of {1,..,n} and as "gapless R-tuples"; the latter n-tuples arise in multiple contexts in these papers.

Row bounds needed to justifiably express flagged Schur functions with Gessel-Viennot determinants
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23 no. 1, Combinatorics (April 23, 2021) dmtcs:6632 • View PublicationBIB
Let $λ$ be a partition with no more than $n$ parts. Let $β$ be a weakly increasing $n$-tuple with entries from $\{ 1, ... , n \}$. The flagged Schur function in the variables $x_1, ... , x_n$ that is indexed by $λ$ and $β$ has been defined to be the sum of the content weight monomials for the semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ whose values are row-wise bounded by the entries of $β$. Gessel and Viennot gave a determinant expression for the flagged Schur function indexed by $λ$ and $β$; this could be done since the pair $(λ, β)$ satisfied their "nonpermutable" condition for the sequence of terminals of an $n$-tuple of lattice paths that they used to model the tableaux. We generalize flagged Schur functions by dropping the requirement that $β$ be weakly increasing. Then for each $λ$ we give a condition on the entries of $β$ for the pair $(λ, β)$ to be nonpermutable that is both necessary and sufficient. When the parts of $λ$ are not distinct there will be multiple row bound $n$-tuples $β$ that will produce the same set of tableaux. We accordingly group the bounding $β$ into equivalence classes and identify the most efficient $β$ in each class for the determinant computation. We recently showed that many other sets of objects that are indexed by $n$ and $λ$ are enumerated by the number of these efficient $n$-tuples. We called these counts "parabolic Catalan numbers". It is noted that the $GL(n)$ Demazure characters (key polynomials) indexed by 312-avoiding permutations can also be expressed with these determinants.

Set-Valued Skyline Fillings
Set-valued tableaux play an important role in combinatorial $K$-theory. Separately, semistandard skyline fillings are a combinatorial model for Demazure atoms and key polynomials. We unify these two concepts by defining a set-valued extension of semistandard skyline fillings and then give analogues of results of J. Haglund, K. Luoto, S. Mason, and S. van Willigenberg. Additionally, we give a bijection between set-valued semistandard Young tableaux and C. Lenart's Schur expansion of the Grothendieck polynomial $G_λ$, using the uncrowding operator of V. Reiner, B. Tenner, and A. Yong.

Enumerating quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux of Durfee size two
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux connect the two most studied types of tableaux. They are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux that are also a refinement on standard Young tableaux, and they can be used to improve the fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur polynomials. We prove a product formula for enumerating certain quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux and provide strong evidence that no product formula exists in general for other shapes. Along the way, we also prove some nice properties of their distribution and symmetry.

Generating Functions for Inverted Semistandard Young Tableaux and Generalized Ballot Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
An inverted semistandard Young tableau is a row-standard tableau along with a collection of inversion pairs that quantify how far the tableau is from being column semistandard. Such a tableau with precisely $k$ inversion pairs is said to be a $k$-inverted semistandard Young tableau. Building upon earlier work by Fresse and the author, this paper develops generating functions for the numbers of $k$-inverted semistandard Young tableau of various shapes $λ$ and contents $μ$. An easily-calculable generating function is given for the number of $k$-inverted semistandard Young tableau that "standardize" to a fixed semistandard Young tableau. For $m$-row shapes $λ$ and standard content $μ$, the total number of $k$-inverted standard Young tableau of shape $λ$ are then enumerated by relating such tableaux to $m$-dimensional generalizations of Dyck paths and counting the numbers of "returns to ground" in those paths. In the rectangular specialization of $λ= n^m$ this yields a generating function that involves $m$-dimensional analogues of the famed Ballot numbers. Our various results are then used to directly enumerate all $k$-inverted semistandard Young tableaux with arbitrary content and two-row shape $λ= a^1 b^1$, as well as all $k$-inverted standard Young tableaux with two-column shape $λ=2^n$.

Genomic Tableaux
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 45 (2017), Issue 3, pp 649-685 • View PublicationBIB
We explain how genomic tableaux [Pechenik-Yong '15] are a semistandard complement to increasing tableaux [Thomas-Yong '09]. From this perspective, one inherits genomic versions of jeu de taquin, Knuth equivalence, infusion and Bender-Knuth involutions, as well as Schur functions from (shifted) semistandard Young tableaux theory. These are applied to obtain new Littlewood-Richardson rules for K-theory Schubert calculus of Grassmannians (after [Buch '02]) and maximal orthogonal Grassmannians (after [Clifford-Thomas-Yong '14], [Buch-Ravikumar '12]). For the unsolved case of Lagrangian Grassmannians, sharp upper and lower bounds using genomic tableaux are conjectured.

The Prism tableau model for Schubert polynomials
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 154 (2018), 551-582 • View PublicationBIB
The Schubert polynomials lift the Schur basis of symmetric polynomials into a basis for Z[x1,x2,...]. We suggest the "prism tableau model" for these polynomials. A novel aspect of this alternative to earlier results is that it directly invokes semistandard tableaux; it does so as part of a colored tableau amalgam. In the Grassmannian case, a prism tableau with colors ignored is a semistandard Young tableau. Our arguments are developed from the Groebner geometry of matrix Schubert varieties.

Inversions of Semistandard Young Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
A tableau inversion is a pair of entries from the same column of a row-standard tableau that lack the relative ordering necessary to make the tableau column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau with precisely $i$ inversion pairs, and may be interpreted as a generalization of (column-standard) Young tableau. Inverted Young tableau that lack repeated entries were introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, and were later developed as combinatorial objects in their own right by Beagley and Drube. This paper generalizes earlier notions of tableau inversions to row-standard tableaux with repeated entries, yielding an interesting new generalization of semistandard (as opposed to merely standard) Young tableaux. We develop a closed formula for the maximum numbers of inversion pairs for a row-standard tableau with a specific shape and content, and show that the number of $i$-inverted tableaux of a given shape is invariant under permutation of content. We then enumerate $i$-inverted Young tableaux for a variety of shapes and contents, and generalize an earlier result that places $1$-inverted Young tableaux of a general shape in bijection with $0$-inverted Young tableaux of a variety of related shapes.

Kostka multiplicity one for multipartitions
If $[λ(j)]$ is a multipartition of the positive integer $n$ (a sequence of partitions with total size $n$), and $μ$ is a partition of $n$, we study the number $K_{[λ(j)]μ}$ of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $[λ(j)]$ and total weight $μ$. We show that the numbers $K_{[λ(j)] μ}$ occur naturally as the multiplicities in certain permutation representations of wreath products. The main result is a set of conditions on $[λ(j)]$ and $μ$ which are equivalent to $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$, generalizing a theorem of Berenshteĭn and Zelevinskiĭ. We also show that the questions of whether $K_{[λ(j)] μ} > 0$ or $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$ can be answered in polynomial time, expanding on a result of Narayanan. Finally, we give an application to multiplicities in the degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representations of the finite general linear group, and we show that the problem of determining whether a given irreducible representation of the finite general linear group appears with nonzero multiplicity in a given degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representation, with their partition parameters as input, is $NP$-complete.

Relating the type A alcove path model to the right key of a semistandard Young tableau, with Demazure character consequences
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 339, p. 2410-2416, 2016 • Search Publication
There are several combinatorial methods that can be used to produce type A Demazure characters (key polynomials). The alcove path model of Lenart and Postnikov provides a procedure that inputs a semistandard tableau $T$ and outputs a saturated chain in the Bruhat order. The final permutation in this chain determines a family of Demazure characters for which $T$ contributes its weight. Separately, the right key of $T$ introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger also determines a family of Demazure characters for which $T$ contributes its weight. In this paper we show that the final permutation in the chain produced by the alcove model corresponds bijectively to the right key of the tableau. From this it follows that the generating sets for the Demazure characters produced by these two methods are equivalent.

q-randomized Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondences and random polymers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study q-randomized Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondences which interpolate between the classical (q=0) and geometric (q->1) RSK correspondences (the latter ones are sometimes also called tropical). For 0<q<1 our correspondences are randomized, i.e., the result of an insertion is a certain probability distribution on semistandard Young tableaux. Because of this randomness, we use the language of discrete time Markov dynamics on two-dimensional interlacing particle arrays (these arrays are in a natural bijection with semistandard tableaux). Our dynamics act nicely on a certain class of probability measures on arrays, namely, on q-Whittaker processes (which are t=0 versions of Macdonald processes). We present four Markov dynamics which for q=0 reduce to the classical row or column RSK correspondences applied to a random input matrix with independent geometric or Bernoulli entries. Our new two-dimensional discrete time dynamics generalize and extend several known constructions: (1) The discrete time q-TASEPs arise as one-dimensional marginals of our "column" dynamics. In a similar way, our "row" dynamics lead to discrete time q-PushTASEPs - new integrable particle systems in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. We employ these new one-dimensional discrete time systems to establish a Fredholm determinantal formula for the two-sided continuous time q-PushASEP conjectured by Corwin-Petrov (2013). (2) In a certain Poisson-type limit (from discrete to continuous time), our two-dimensional dynamics reduce to the q-randomized column and row Robinson-Schensted correspondences introduced by O'Connell-Pei (2012) and Borodin-Petrov (2013), respectively. (3) In a scaling limit as q->1, two of our four dynamics on interlacing arrays turn into the geometric RSK correspondences associated with log-Gamma or strict-weak directed random polymers.

Dual immaculate creation operators and a dendriform algebra structure on the quasisymmetric functions
Published in Canad. J. Math. 69(2017), 21-53 (published version is version 5 without ancillary file) • View PublicationBIB
The dual immaculate functions are a basis of the ring QSym of quasisymmetric functions, and form one of the most natural analogues of the Schur functions. The dual immaculate function corresponding to a composition is a weighted generating function for immaculate tableaux in the same way as a Schur function is for semistandard Young tableaux; an "immaculate tableau" is defined similarly to a semistandard Young tableau, but the shape is a composition rather than a partition, and only the first column is required to strictly increase (whereas the other columns can be arbitrary; but each row has to weakly increase). Dual immaculate functions have been introduced by Berg, Bergeron, Saliola, Serrano and Zabrocki in arXiv:1208.5191, and have since been found to possess numerous nontrivial properties. In this note, we prove a conjecture of Mike Zabrocki which provides an alternative construction for the dual immaculate functions in terms of certain "vertex operators". The proof uses a dendriform structure on the ring QSym; we discuss the relation of this structure to known dendriform structures on the combinatorial Hopf algebras FQSym and WQSym.
