Cohen-Lenstra flag universality for random matrix products
For $n \times n$ random integer matrices $M_1,\ldots,M_k$, the cokernels of the partial products $\mathrm{cok}(M_1 \cdots M_i), 1 \leq i \leq k$ naturally define a random flag of abelian $p$-groups. We prove that as $n \to \infty$, this flag converges universally, for any nondegenerate entry distribution, to the Cohen-Lenstra type measure which weights each flag inversely proportional to the size of its automorphism group. As a corollary, we prove universality of certain formulas for the limiting conditional distribution of $\mathrm{cok}(M_1M_2)$ given $\mathrm{cok}(M_1),\mathrm{cok}(M_2)$ in terms of Hall-Littlewood structure constants, which were previously obtained only for Haar matrices over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. Our proofs combine the general technology of Sawin-Wood, matrix product moment computations following those of Nguyen-Van Peski, and the computation done previously for Haar $p$-adic matrices by Huang.

Thomason-Type Model Structures on Simplicial Complexes and Graphs
In this paper we show that the Matsushita model structure on loop graphs, which is right-transferred from the Kan-Quillen model structure on simplicial sets, factors through two other right-transferred model structures on simplicial complexes and reflexive graphs. We show that each Quillen adjunction between these right-transferred model categories is a Quillen equivalence. These model structures are analogous to the Thomason model structure on small categories, and we prove that they are all cofibrantly generated and proper. Furthermore we show that all cofibrant simplicial complexes are flag complexes, and all forests are cofibrant.
Comparing cluster algebras on braid varieties
Braid varieties parametrize linear configurations of flags with transversality conditions dictated by positive braids. They include and generalize reduced double Bruhat cells, positroid varieties, open Bott-Samelson varieties, and Richardson varieties, among others. Recently, two cluster algebra structures were independently constructed in the coordinate rings of braid varieties: one using weaves and the other using Deodhar geometry. The main result of the article is that these two cluster algebras coincide. More generally, our comparative study matches the different concepts and results from each approach to the other, both on the combinatorial and algebraic geometric aspects.

Descent sets of cyclic permutations in types B and D
Elizalde constructed a bijection $φ$ from the cyclic permutations $π\in S_{n+1}$ to the symmetric group $S_n$ satisfying $\operatorname{Des}(π)\cap \{1,2,\ldots,n-1\}=\operatorname{Des}(φ(π))$. We give a corresponding result on the signed symmetric group $B_n$ by constructing a function $Φ$ from the cyclic signed permutations $π\in B_{n+1}$ to $B_n$ satisfying $\operatorname{Des}(π)\cap \{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}=\operatorname{Des}(Φ(π))$. Moreover, letting $D_{n+1}\subseteq B_{n+1}$ be the subgroup consisting of signed permutations with an even number of sign changes, we show that the restriction of $Φ$ to the cyclic signed permutations in $D_{n+1}$ or its complement is a bijection. Our function $Φ$ reduces to Elizalde's original bijection $φ$ under the natural identification of the symmetric groups as subgroups of the signed symmetric groups. One application of our results is asymptotic normality of the descent and flag major index statistics on the cyclic signed permutations in $B_{n}$ and $D_n$.
Notes on the cohomology of partial Hessenberg varieties
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of full flag varieties. This family contains well-known varieties such as Springer fibers, Peterson varieties, and permutohedral varieties. It was introduced by De Mari-Procesi-Shayman in 1992 and has been actively studied in this decade. In particular, unexpected relations to hyperplane arrangements and the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in graph theory have been discovered. Hessenberg varieties can be defined in partial flag varieties. In this paper, we study their cohomology by relating them to the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties in the full flag varieties.

Kalai's flag conjecture for locally anti-blocking polytopes
We prove Kalai's full flag conjecture for the class of locally anti-blocking polytopes, and show that there is equality if and only if the polytope is a (generalized) Hanner polytope.

A simple proof that the edge density of Fon-der-Flaass $(3,4)$-graph is $\geq\frac{7}{16}(1-o(1))$
In 2018, Alexander A. Razborov proved that the edge density of Fon-der-Flaass $(3,4)$-graph is $\geq\frac{7}{16}(1-o(1))$, using flag algebras. In this paper, we give an elementary proof of this result.
A Nakayama result for the quantum K theory of homogeneous spaces
Published in Épijournal de Géométrie Algébrique, Volume 9 (December 12, 2025) epiga:17016 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the ideal of relations in the (equivariant) quantum K ring of a homogeneous space is generated by quantizations of each of the generators of the ideal in the classical (equivariant) K ring. This extends to quantum K theory a result of Siebert and Tian in quantum cohomology. We illustrate this technique in the case of the quantum K ring of partial flag manifolds, using a set of quantum K Whitney relations conjectured by the authors, and recently proved by Huq-Kuruvilla.

Some exact inducibility-type results for graphs via flag algebras
The $(κ,\ell)$-edge-inducibility problem asks for the maximum number of $κ$-subsets inducing exactly $\ell$ edges that a graph of given order $n$ can have. Using flag algebras and stability approach, we resolve this problem for all sufficiently large $n$ (including a description of all extremal and almost extremal graphs) in eleven new non-trivial cases when $κ\le 7$. We also compute the $F$-inducibility constant (the asymptotically maximum density of induced copies of $F$ in a graph of given order $n$) and obtain some corresponding structure results for three new graphs $F$ with $5$ vertices: the 3-edge star plus an isolated vertex, the 4-cycle plus an isolated vertex, and the 4-cycle with a pendant edge.

Introduction to the Cohomology of the Flag Variety
One hundred years ago, Hilbert gave a list of important open problems in mathematics. His 15th problem asked for the development of a rigorous calculus explaining Schubert's enumerative results for intersecting varieties defined by rank conditions on vector spaces. Today by way of many contributions in algebraic topology, geometry, and combinatorics, we consider this solved. Yet, deep questions remain about the subtleties of actually carrying out the process. In this chapter, we hope to summarize the rigorous development of what has become known as Schubert calculus, with an eye toward computation. We discuss Grassmannians and flag varieties and their cohomology rings, following Monk's constructive algebraic approach. We derive formulas for Schur and Schubert polynomials, which represent cohomology classes of Schubert varieties. We hint at the vast literature in this area and point to the other references in the Handbook for more information. Finally, we identify open problems that remain a challenge even with modern tools at our fingertips in hopes of inspiring further contributions in this fascinating field. This is intended as the first chapter of a book entitled "Handbook of Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry: Subvarieties of the Flag Variety", a compendium of topics in the area. The book is being edited by Erik Insko, Martha Precup, and Ed Richmond. In addition to this introductory chapter, others will cover more advanced topics such as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, generalized smooth Schubert varieties, Richardson varieties and positroid varieties, spherical and torus orbit closures, spanning line configurations, different types of Hessenberg varieties, and generalizations to Kac-Moody flag varieties, each written by experts in those areas. We hope you enjoy this chapter enough to seek out the others, and that you send us any comments or corrections you find as you read this article!

On the Erdős-Ko-Rado problem of flags with type $\{1, n-3 \}$ of finite sets
A flag of a finite set $S$ is a set $f$ of non-empty, proper subsets of $S$, such that $X\subseteq Y$ or $Y\subseteq X$ for all $X,Y\in f$. Two flags $f_1$ and $f_2$ of $S$ are opposite if $X_1\cap X_2=\emptyset$, or $X_1\cup X_2=S$ for all $X_1\in f_1$ and $X_2\in f_2$. The set $\{|X| \mid X\in f \}$ is the type of a flag $f$. A set of pairwise non-opposite flags is an Erdős-Ko-Rado set. In 2022 Metsch posed the problem of determining the maximum size of all Erdős-Ko-Rado sets of flags of type $T$ with $|T|=2$. We contribute towards this by determining the maximum size for flags of type $\{ 1,n-3\}$ for finite sets with $n$ elements. Furthermore we answer an open questions of Metsch regarding a small case.

Chern Classes of Toric Variety Bundles
In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Khovanskii--Monin on the Chern classes of toric variety bundles. The main result is a formula for the total Chern class of the tangent bundle of a toric variety bundle in terms of the total Chern class of the base and the total Chern class of the toric fibre. The result serves as a simultaneous generalization of the description of the total Chern class of a projectivized vector bundle and of the formula for the total Chern class of a toric variety in terms of the Chern classes of the toric divisors. We also establish a topological version of this statement for stably complex quasitoric manifolds. As an immediate application, we obtain a formula for the total Chern class of a toroidal horospherical variety in terms of the Chern classes of the generalized flag variety and the total Chern class of the toric fibre, as well as a new proof of Masuda's formula for equivariant Chern classes. This paper is written with a view towards finding polytopal models for various numeric invariants of spherical varieties.

Upper cluster structure on Kac--Moody Richardson varieties
We show coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. We further show the coordinate rings of (generalized) open Richardson varieties on the twisted product of flag varieties are upper cluster algebras for any symmetrizable Kac--Moody type. This includes, as special cases, reduced double Bruhat cells, Bott-Samelson varieties, braid varieties. Our results generalize various results by Casals--Gorsky--Gorsky--Le--Shen--Simental and Galashin--Lam--Sherman-Bennett--Speyer in finite types.

Changing Bases with Pipe Dream Combinatorics
Lascoux and Schützenberger introduced Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials to study the cohomology and K-theory of the complete flag variety. We present explicit combinatorial rules for expressing Grothendieck polynomials in the basis of Schubert polynomials, and vice versa, using the bumpless pipe dreams (BPDs) of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. A key advantage of BPDs is that they are naturally back stable, which allows us to give a combinatorial formula for expanding back stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of back stable Schubert polynomials. We also provide pipe dream interpretations for the rules originally given by Lenart (Grothendieck to Schubert) and Lascoux (Schubert to Grothendieck), which were previously formulated in terms of binary triangular arrays. We give new proofs of these results, relying on Knutson's co-transition recurrences. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for expanding Grothendieck polynomials into Schubert polynomials using chains in Bruhat order. The key connection between the pipe dream and BPD change of basis formulas is the canonical bijection of Gao and Huang. We show that co-permutations are preserved by this map.

Semiregular abstract polyhedra with trivial facet stabilizer
Abstract polytopes generalize the face lattice of convex polytopes. A polytope is semiregular if its facets are regular and its automorphism group acts transitively on its vertices. In this paper we construct semiregular, facet-transitive polyhedra with trivial facet stabilizer, showing that semiregular abstract polyhedra can have an unbounded number of flag orbits, while having as little as one facet orbit. We interpret this construction in terms of operations applied to high rank regular and chiral polytopes, and we see how this same operations help us construct alternating semiregular polyhedra (that is, with two facet orbits and adjacent facets in different orbits). Finally, we give an idea to generalize this construction giving examples in higher ranks.
Quasi-strongly regular graphs on the flags of symmetric designs
This paper was inspired by a paper by Blokhuis and Brouwer [Designs, Codes and Cryptography 65, 2012] in which a definition of a graph on the flags of a biplane is given, and they prove that the graph corresponding to the unique $(11,5,2)$-biplane is determined by its spectrum. It is also inspired by the different definition of flag-graph seen in the context of maps and abstract polytopes. Here we use this definition for $(v,k,λ)$-BIBDs, and prove that if the design is symmetric then the graph is quasi-strongly regular. We will also use the definition given by Blokhuis and Brouwer for the case of biplanes and prove that this too, is a QSRG, (with different parameters). We investigate whether these graphs are determined by their spectra for some of the known biplanes.
Quantum $K$-theoretic divisor axiom for flag manifolds
We prove an identity for (torus-equivariant) 3-point, genus 0, $K$-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of flag manifolds $G/P$, which can be thought of as a replacement for the ``divisor axiom'' in their (torus-equivariant) quantum $K$-theory. This identity enables us to compute these invariants when two insertions are Schubert classes and the other a Schubert divisor class. Our type-independent proof utilizes the Chevalley formula for the (torus-equivariant) quantum $K$-theory ring of flag manifolds, which computes multiplications by Schubert divisor classes in terms of the quantum Bruhat graph.
The largest sets of non-opposite chambers in spherical buildings of type $B$
The investigation into large families of non-opposite flags in finite spherical buildings has been a recent addition to a long line of research in extremal combinatorics, extending classical results in vector and polar spaces. This line of research falls under the umbrella of Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) problems, but poses some extra difficulty on the algebraic level compared to aforementioned classical results. From the building theory point of view, it can be seen as a variation of the center conjecture for spherical buildings due to Tits, where we replace the convexity assumption by a maximality condition. In previous work, general upper bounds on the size of families of non-opposite flags were obtained by applying eigenvalue and representation-theoretic techniques to the Iwahori-Hecke algebras of non-exceptional buildings. More recently, the classification of families reaching this upper bound in type $A_n$, for $n$ odd, was accomplished by Heering, Lansdown, and Metsch. For buildings of type $B$, the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebra is more complicated and depends non-trivially on the type and rank of the underlying polar space. Nevertheless, we are able to find a uniform method based on antidesigns and obtain classification results for chambers (i.e.\ maximal flags) in all cases, except type $^2A_{4n-3}$.
Some algebraic properties of ASM varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fulton's matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties that arise in the study of Schubert calculus in the complete flag variety. Weigandt showed that arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties, now called ASM varieties, are indexed by alternating sign matrices (ASMs), objects with a long history in enumerative combinatorics. It is very difficult to assess Cohen-Macaulayness of ASM varieties or to compute their codimension, though these properties are well understood for matrix Schubert varieties due to work of Fulton. In this paper we study these properties of ASM varieties with a focus on the relationship between a pair of ASMs and their direct sum. We also consider ASM pattern avoidance from an algebro-geometric perspective.

Regular 3-polytopes of type $\{n,n\}$
For each integer \( n \geq 3 \), we construct a self-dual regular 3-polytope \( \mathcal{P} \) of type \( \{n, n\} \) with \( 2^n n \) flags, resolving two foundamental open questions on the existence of regular polytopes with certain Schläfli types. The automorphism group \( \operatorname{Aut}(\mathcal{P}) \) is explicitly realized as the semidirect product \( \mathbb{F}_2^{n-1} \rtimes D_{2n} \), where \( D_{2n} \) is the dihedral group of order \( 2n \), with a complete presentation for \( \operatorname{Aut}(\mathcal{P}) \) is provided. This advances the systematic construction of regular polytopes with prescribed symmetries.
