Hyperbolicity, topology, and combinatorics of fine curve graphs and variants
Given a surface, the fine $k$-curve graph of the surface is a graph whose vertices are simple closed essential curves and whose edges connect curves that intersect in at most $k$ points. We note that the fine $k$-curve graph is hyperbolic for all $k$ and, for $k\geq 2,$ show that it contains as induced subgraphs all countable graphs. We also show that the direct limit of this family of graphs, which we call the finitary curve graph, has diameter 2, has a contractible flag complex, contains every countable graph as an induced subgraph, and has as its automorphism group the homeomorphism group of the surface. Finally, we explore some finite graphs that are not induced subgraphs of fine curve graphs.

The open projected Richardson varieties form a stratification for the partial flag variety $G/P$. We compare the Segre--MacPherson classes of open projected Richardson varieties with those of the corresponding affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. In the case of the Grassmannian $G/P=\operatorname{Gr}_k(\mathbb{C}^n)$, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as open positroid varieties. We obtain symmetric functions that represent the Segre--MacPherson classes of these open positroid varieties, constructed explicitly in terms of pipe dreams for affine permutations.
The Lehmer complex of a Bruhat interval
We introduce Lehmer codes, with immersions in the Bruhat order, for several finite Coxeter groups, including all the classical Weyl groups. This allows to associate to each lower Bruhat interval of these groups a multicomplex whose f-polynomial is the Poincaré polynomial of the interval. Via a general construction, we prove that these polynomials are h-polynomials of vertex-decomposable simplicial complexes. Moreover we provide a classification, in terms of unimodal permutations, of Poincaré polynomials of smooth Schubert varieties in flag manifolds.
Tableau formula for vexillary double Edelman--Greene coefficients
Lam, Lee and Shimozono recently introduced backstable double Grothendieck polynomials to represent $K$-theory classes of the infinite flag variety. They used them to define double $β$-Stanley symmetric functions, which expand into double stable Grothendieck functions with polynomial coefficients called double $β$-Edelman--Greene coefficients. Anderson proved these coefficients are $β$-Graham positive. For vexillary permutations, this is equivalent to a statement for skew flagged double $β$-Grothendieck functions. Working in this setting, we give a tableau formula for vexillary double $β$-Edelman--Greene coefficients that is manifestly $β$-Graham positive. Our formula demonstrates a finer notion of positivity than was previously known.
On some Grothendieck expansions
The complete flag variety admits a natural action by both the orthogonal group and the symplectic group. Wyser and Yong defined orthogonal Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ and symplectic Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ as the $K$-theory classes of the corresponding orbit closures. There is an explicit formula to expand $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ as a nonnegative sum of Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}_w$, which represent the $K$-theory classes of Schubert varieties. Although the constructions of $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ and $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ are similar, finding the $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion of $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ or even computing $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ is much harder. If $z$ is vexillary then $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ has a nonnegative $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion, but the associated coefficients are mostly unknown. This paper derives several new formulas for $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ and its $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion when $z$ is vexillary. Among other applications, we prove that the latter expansion has a nontrivial stability property.
Forcing Graphs to be Forcing
Sidorenko's conjecture states that the number of copies of any given bipartite graph in another graph of given density is asymptotically minimized by a random graph. The forcing conjecture further strengthens this, claiming that any minimizer in fact needs to be quasi-random. Here we extend the family of bipartite graphs for which the forcing conjecture is known to hold to include balanced blow-ups of Sidorenko graphs and subdivisions of Sidorenko graphs by a forcing graph. This partially generalizes results by Conlon et al. (2018) and Conlon and Lee (2021). We also show that the box product of a Sidorenko graph with an edge is forcing, partially generalizing results of Kim, Lee, and Lee (2016) and, in particular, showing that cubes are forcing. We achieve these results through algebraic arguments building on Razborov's flag algebra framework (2007). This approach additionally allows us to construct Sidorenko hypergraphs from known 2-uniform Sidorenko graphs and to study forcing pairs.
A conjecture on descents, inversions and the weak order
In this article, we discuss the notion of partition of elements in an arbitrary Coxeter system $(W,S)$: a partition of an element $w$ is a subset $\mathcal P\subseteq W$ such that the left inversion set of $w$ is the disjoint union of the left inversion set of the elements in $\mathcal P$. Partitions of elements of $W$ arises in the study of the Belkale-Kumar product on the cohomology $H^*(X,\mathbb Z)$, where $X$ is the complete flag variety of any complex semi-simple algebraic group. Partitions of elements in the symmetric group $\mathcal S_n$ are also related to the {\em Babington-Smith model} in algebraic statistics or to the simplicial faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone.
We state the conjecture that the number of right descents of $w$ is the sum of the number of right descents of the elements of $\mathcal P$ and prove that this conjecture holds in the cases of symmetric groups (type $A$) and hyperoctahedral groups (type $B$).
Positive co-degree densities and jumps
The minimum positive co-degree of a nonempty $r$-graph $H$, denoted by $δ_{r-1}^+(H)$, is the largest integer $k$ such that for every $(r-1)$-set $S \subset V(H)$, if $S$ is contained in a hyperedge of $H$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ hyperedges of $H$. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $r$-graphs, the positive co-degree Turán function $\mathrm{co^+ex}(n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum of $δ_{r-1}^+(H)$ over all $n$-vertex $r$-graphs $H$ containing no member of $\mathcal{F}$. The positive co-degree density of $\mathcal{F}$ is $γ^+(\mathcal{F}) = \underset{n \rightarrow \infty}{\lim} \frac{\mathrm{co^+ex}(n,\mathcal{F})}{n}.$ While the existence of $γ^+(\mathcal{F})$ is proved for all families $\mathcal{F}$, only few positive co-degree densities are known exactly.
For a fixed $r \geq 2$, we call $α\in [0,1]$ an achievable value if there exists a family of $r$-graphs $\mathcal{F}$ with $γ^+(\mathcal{F}) = α$, and call $α$ a jump if for some $δ> 0$, there is no family $\mathcal{F}$ with $γ^+(\mathcal{F}) \in (α, α+ δ)$. Halfpap, Lemons, and Palmer showed that every $α\in [0, \frac{1}{r})$ is a jump. We extend this result by showing that every $α\in [0, \frac{2}{2r -1})$ is a jump. We also show that for $r = 3$, the set of achievable values is infinite, more precisely, $\frac{k-2}{2k-3}$ for every $k \geq 4$ is achievable. Finally, we determine two additional achievable values for $r=3$ using flag algebra calculations.
On the Classification of Schubert Varieties in Partial Flag Varieties
We generalize the classification of isomorphism classes of Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties G/B to a class of partial flag varieties G/P. In particular, we classify all Schubert varieties in G/P where P is a minimal parabolic subgroup and all Schubert surfaces. We also obtain several pairs of isomorphisms of Schubert varieties from folding the root system. This allows us to find an upper bound of the cardinality of isomorphism classes of Schubert three-folds.
Phase limit sets of linear spaces and discriminants
We show that the closure of the coamoeba of a linear space/hyperplane complement is the union of products of coamoebas of hyperplane complements coming from flags of flats, and relate this to the Bergman fan. Using the Horn-Kapranov parameterization of a reduced discriminant, this gives a partial description of the phase limit sets of discriminants and duals of toric varieties. When d=3, we show that each 3-dimensional component of the phase limit set of the discriminant is a prism over a discriminant coamoeba in dimension 2, which has a polyhedral description by a result of Nilsson and Passare.
Simplicial vs. cubical spheres, polyhedral products and the Nevo-Petersen conjecture
We prove that a Murai sphere is flag if and only if it is a nerve complex of a flag nestohedron and classify all the polytopes arising in this way. Our classification implies that flag Murai spheres satisfy the Nevo-Petersen conjecture on $γ$-vectors of flag homology spheres. We continue by showing that a Bier sphere is minimally non-Golod if and only if it is a nerve complex of a truncation polytope different from a simplex and classify all the polytopes arising in this way. Finally, the notion of a cubical Bier sphere is introduced based on the polyhedral product construction, and we study combinatorial and geometrical properties of these cubical complexes.
Enumeration of crossings in two-step puzzles
We prove a formula which gives the number of occurrences of certain labels and local configurations inside two-step puzzles introduced by Buch, Kresch, Purbhoo and Tamvakis from the work of Knutson. Puzzles are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles and are known to compute the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology of two-step flag varieties. The formula that we obtain depends only on the boundary conditions of the puzzle. The proof is based on the study of color maps which are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles obtained from puzzles.
Polymatroids and moduli of points in flags
We introduce and study different compactifications of the moduli space of $n$ distinct weighted labeled points in a flag of affine spaces. We construct these spaces via the weighted and generalized Fulton-MacPherson compactifications of Routis and Kim-Sato. For certain weights, our compactifications are toric and isomorphic to the polypermutohedral and polystellahedral varieties, which arise in the work of Crowley-Huh-Larson-Simpson-Wang and Eur-Larson on polymatroids, a generalization of matroids. Moreover, we show that these toric compactifications have a fibration structure, with fibers isomorphic to the Losev-Manin space, and are related to each other via a geometric quotient.
Chow functions for partially ordered sets
Three decades ago, Stanley and Brenti initiated the study of the Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley (KLS) functions, putting on common ground several polynomials appearing in algebraic combinatorics, discrete geometry, and representation theory. In the present paper we develop a theory that parallels the KLS theory. To each kernel in a given poset, we associate a polynomial function that we call the \emph{Chow function}. The Chow function often exhibits remarkable properties, and sometimes encodes the graded dimensions of a cohomology or Chow ring. The framework of Chow functions provides natural polynomial analogs of graded module decompositions that appear in algebraic geometry, but that work for arbitrary posets, even when no graded module decomposition is known to exist. In this general framework, we prove a number of unimodality and positivity results without relying on versions of the Hard Lefschetz theorem. Our framework shows that there is an unexpected relation between positivity and real-rootedness conjectures about chains on face lattices of polytopes by Brenti and Welker, Hilbert--Poincaré series of matroid Chow rings by Ferroni and Schröter, and flag enumerations on Bruhat intervals of Coxeter groups by Billera and Brenti.
Repeated Lefschetz-like decompositions for flag doubly Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complexes and gamma vectors of flag spheres
We find decompositions of $h$-polynomials of flag doubly Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex that yield a direct connection between gamma vectors of flag spheres and constructions used to build them geometrically. More specifically, they are determined by iterated double suspensions and a "net nonnegative set of edge subdivisions" taking it to the given flag doubly Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. By a "net nonnegative set of edge subdivision", we mean a collection of edge subdivisions and contractions where there are at least as many edge subdivisions as contractions.
Returning to the flag spheres, these repeated decompositions involve links over collections of disjoint edges and give an analogue of a Lefschetz map that applies to each step of the decomposition. The constructions used also give a direct interpretation of the Boolean decompositions coming from links and those of the entire simplicial complex. Roughly speaking, the Boolean vs. non-Boolean distinction is used to measure how far a flag sphere is from being the boundary of a cross polytope. An analogue of this statement for flag doubly Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes would replace boundaries of cross polytopes by repeated suspensions of links over edges of the given simplicial complex.
Orthogonal and symplectic orbits in the affine flag variety of type A
It is a classical result that the set $K\backslash G /B$ is finite, where $G$ is a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field with characteristic not equal to two, $B$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$, and $K = G^θ$ is the fixed point subgroup of an involution of $G$. In this paper, we investigate the affine counterpart of the aforementioned set, where $G$ is the general linear group over formal Laurent series, $B$ is an Iwahori subgroup of $G$, and $K$ is either the orthogonal group or the symplectic group over formal Laurent series. We construct explicit bijections between the double cosets $K \backslash G/B$ and certain twisted affine involutions. This is the first combinatorial description of $K$-orbits in the affine flag variety of type A.
Recursive properties of Cohen--Macaulay flag simplicial complexes and Lefschetz decompositions from $f$-vectors
Most applications of the hard Lefschetz theorem related to combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes involve their $h$-vectors. In the context of positivity properties involving $h$-vectors of flag spheres, $f$-vectors with a Lefschetz-type ``Boolean'' decomposition have been studied. In this note, we explore families of flag simplicial complexes where we can see this Boolean decomposition explicitly in terms of transformations connecting different simplicial complexes in this family. Note that we will take complexes in a given dimension to be PL homeomorphic to each other. In particular, the existence of a Boolean decomposition patched from local parts can be phrased in terms of a certain map formally satisfying an analogue of the hard Lefschetz theorem. The map is given by the composition of a double suspension with a ``net single edge subdivision''. Here, the former contributes to the Boolean part and the latter contributes to the disjoint non-Boolean part. The fact that the simplicial complex with the given $f$-vector can be taken to be balanced suggests algebraic versions of maps connected to these decompositions.
Stable-limit partially symmetric Macdonald functions and parabolic flag Hilbert schemes
The modified Macdonald functions $\widetilde{H}_μ$ are fundamental objects in modern algebraic combinatorics. Haiman showed that there is a correspondence between the $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-fixed points $I_μ$ of the Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{n}(\mathbb{C}^2)$ and the functions $\widetilde{H}_μ$ realizing a derived equivalence between $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $\mathrm{Hilb}_{n}(\mathbb{C}^2)$ and $(\mathfrak{S}_n \times (\mathbb{C}^{*})^2)$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $(\mathbb{C}^2)^n.$ Carlsson--Gorsky--Mellit introduced a larger family of smooth projective varieties $\mathrm{PFH}_{n,n-k}$ called the parabolic flag Hilbert schemes. They showed that an algebra $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$, directly related to the double Dyck path algebra $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ employed in Carlsson--Mellit's proof of the Shuffle Theorem, acts naturally on the $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-equivariant K-theory $U_{\bullet}$ of these spaces and, moreover, there is a $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$-isomorphism $Φ: U_{\bullet} \rightarrow V_{\bullet}$ where $V_{\bullet}$ is the polynomial representation. The isomorphism $Φ: U_{\bullet} \rightarrow V_{\bullet}$ is known to extend Haiman's correspondence. In this paper, we explicitly compute the images $Φ(H_{μ,w})$ of the normalized $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-fixed point classes $H_{μ,w}$ of the spaces $\mathrm{PFH}_{n,n-k}$ and show they agree with the modified partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials $\widetilde{H}_{(λ|γ)}$ introduced by Goodberry-Orr, confirming their prior conjecture. We use this result to give an explicit formula for the action of the involution $\mathcal{N}$ on $V_{\bullet}.$
Tropicalizing Principal Minors of Positive Definite Matrices
We study the tropicalization of the image of the cone of positive definite matrices under the principal minors map. It is a polyhedral subset of the set of $M$-concave functions on the discrete $n$-dimensional cube. We show it coincides with the intersection of the affine tropical flag variety with the submodular cone. In particular, any cell in the regular subdivision of the cube induced by a point in this tropicalization can be subdivided into base polytopes of realizable matroids. We use this tropicalization as a guide to discover new algebraic inequalities among the principal minors of positive semidefinite matrices of a fixed size. We also extend our results to positive semidefinite matrices via taking closures in the tropical semifield $\mathbb{R}\cup\{-\infty\}$.
On two notions of total positivity for generalized partial flag varieties of classical Lie types
For Grassmannians, Lusztig's notion of total positivity coincides with positivity of the Plucker coordinates. This coincidence underpins the rich interaction between matroid theory, tropical geometry, and the theory of total positivity. Bloch and Karp furthermore characterized the (type A) partial flag varieties for which the two notions of positivity similarly coincide. We characterize the symplectic (type C) and odd-orthogonal (type B) partial flag varieties for which Lusztig's total positivity coincides with Plucker positivity.
