$qt$RSK${}^*$: A probabilistic dual RSK correspondence for Macdonald polynomials
We introduce a probabilistic generalization of the dual Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence, called $qt$RSK${}^*$, depending on two parameters $q$ and $t$. This correspondence extends the $q$RS$t$ correspondence, recently introduced by the authors, and allows the first tableaux-theoretic proof of the dual Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials. By specializing $q$ and $t$, one recovers the row and column insertion version of the classical dual RSK correspondence as well as of $q$- and $t$-deformations thereof which are connected to $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood polynomials. When restricting to Jack polynomials and $\{0,1\}$-matrices corresponding to words, we prove that the insertion tableaux obtained by $qt$RSK${}^*$ are invariant under swapping letters in the input word. Our approach is based on Fomin's growth diagrams and the notion of probabilistic bijections.
Representations from matrix varieties, and filtered RSK
Matrix Schubert varieties (Fulton '92) carry natural actions of Levi groups. Their coordinate rings are thereby Levi-representations; what is a combinatorial counting rule for the multiplicities of their irreducibles? When the Levi group is a torus, (Knutson-Miller '04) answers the question. We present a general solution, a common refinement of the multigraded Hilbert series, the Cauchy identity, and the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Our result applies to any ``bicrystalline'' algebraic variety; we define these using the operators of (Kashiwara '95) and of (Danilov-Koshevoi '05, van Leeuwen '06). The proof introduces a ``filtered'' generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.
Symmetric functions from the six-vertex model in half-space

We study the stochastic six-vertex model in half-space with generic integrable boundary weights, and define two families of multivariate rational symmetric functions. Using commutation relations between double-row operators, we prove a skew Cauchy identity of these functions. In a certain degeneration of the right-hand side of the Cauchy identity we obtain the partition function of the six-vertex model in a half-quadrant, and give a Pfaffian formula for this quantity. The Pfaffian is a direct generalization of a formula obtained by Kuperberg in his work on symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices. One of our families of symmetric functions admits an integral (sum over residues) formula, and we use this to conjecture an orthogonality property of the dual family. We conclude by studying the reduction of our integral formula to transition probabilities of the (initially empty) asymmetric simple exclusion process on the half-line.
Dual Schubert polynomials via a Cauchy identity
We give a combinatorial proof that Postnikov and Stanley's formula for dual Schubert polynomials in terms of weighted chains in Bruhat order is equivalent to a classical Cauchy identity for polynomials. This gives a natural interpretation of Huang and Pylyavskyy's recent insertion algorithms.
Coloured corner processes from asymptotics of LLT polynomials
We consider probability measures arising from the Cauchy summation identity for the LLT (Lascoux--Leclerc--Thibon) symmetric polynomials of rank $n \geq 1$. We study the asymptotic behaviour of these measures as one of the two sets of polynomials in the Cauchy identity stays fixed, while the other one grows to infinity. At $n=1$, this corresponds to an analogous limit of the Schur process, which is known to be given by the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) corners process.
Our main result states that, for $n>1$, our measures asymptotically split into two parts: a continuous one and a discrete one. The continuous part is a product of $n$ GUE corners processes; the discrete part is an explicit finite distribution on interlacing $n$-colourings of $n$ interlacing triangles, which has weights that are rational functions in the LLT parameter $q$. The latter distribution has a number of interesting (partly conjectural) combinatorial properties, such as $q$-nonnegativity and enumerative phenomena underlying its support.
Our main tools are two different representations of the LLT polynomials, one as partition functions of a fermionic lattice model of rank $n$, and the other as finite-dimensional contour integrals, which were recently obtained in arXiv:2012.02376, arXiv:2101.01605.
Nonsymmetric $q$-Cauchy identity and representations of the Iwahori algebra
The $t=0$ specialization of the Mimachi-Noumi Cauchy-type identity rewrites certain infinite product in terms of specialized nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials of type $GL_n$. We interpret the infinite product as a character of the space of functions on a certain matrix space. We show that the space of functions admits a filtration such that the graded pieces are isomorphic to the tensor products of certain generalized global Weyl modules of the Iwahori algebra. We identify the characters of the graded pieces with the terms of the specialized Mimachi-Noumi formula. We conjecture the existence of an analogous filtration on the space of functions on the Iwahori group for all simple Lie algebras and prove the conjecture for $SL_n$. Our construction can be seen as a current algebra extension of the van der Kallen filtration on functions on a Borel subgroup.
Generating functions for some series of characters of classical Lie groups
There exist a number of well known multiplicative generating functions for series of Schur functions. Amongst these are some related to the dual Cauchy identity whose expansion coefficients are rather simple, and in some cases periodic in parameters specifying the Schur functions. More recently similar identities have been found involving expansions in terms of characters of the symplectic group. Here these results are extended and generalised to all classical Lie groups. This is done through the derivation of explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients based on the action of the Weyl groups of both the symplectic and orthogonal groups. Copious results are tabulated in the form of explicit values of the expansion coefficients as functions of highest weight parameters. An alternative approach is then based on dual pairs of symplectic and/or orthogonal groups. A byproduct of this approach is that expansions in terms of spin orthogonal group characters can always be recovered from non-spin cases.

We elaborate on the recent suggestion to consider averaging of Cauchy identities for the Schur functions over power sum variables. This procedure has apparent parallels with the Borel transform, only it changes the number of combinatorial factors like $d_R$ in the sums over Young diagrams instead of just factorials in ordinary sums over numbers. It provides a universal view on a number of previously known, but seemingly random identities.
Free Fermionic Schur Functions

We introduce a new family of Schur functions $s_{λ/μ;a,b}(x/y)$ that depend on two sets of variables and two sequences of parameters. These free fermionic Schur functions have a hidden symmetry between the two sets of parameters that allows us to generalize and unify factorial, supersymmetric, and dual Schur functions from literature.
We then prove that these functions satisfy the supersymmetric Cauchy identity $$
\sum_λs_{λ;a,b}(x/y)\widehat{s}_{λ;a,b}(z/w) = \prod_{i,j}\frac{1+y_iz_j}{1-x_iz_j}\frac{1+x_iw_j}{1-y_iw_j}, $$ where $\widehat{s}_{λ;a,b}(z/w) = s_{λ';b',a'}(w/z)$ are the dual functions.
Our approach is based on the integrable six vertex model with free fermionic Boltzmann weights. We show that these weights satisfy the \textit{refined Yang-Baxter equation}, which allows us to prove well-known properties of Schur functions: supersymmetry, combinatorial descriptions, the Jacobi-Trudi identity, the Nägelsbach-Kostka formula, the Giambelli formula, the Ribbon formula, the Weyl determinant formula, the Berele-Regev factorization, dual Cauchy identity, the flagged determinant formula, and many others. We emphasize that many of these results are novel even in special cases.

The $K$-theoretic Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions $GP_λ$ and $GQ_λ$ may be concretely defined as weight generating functions for semistandard shifted set-valued tableaux. These symmetric functions are the shifted analogues of stable Grothendieck polynomials, and were introduced by Ikeda and Naruse for applications in geometry. Nakagawa and Naruse specified families of dual $K$-theoretic Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions $gp_λ$ and $gq_λ$ via a Cauchy identity involving $GP_λ$ and $GQ_λ$. They conjectured that the dual power series are weight generating functions for certain shifted plane partitions. We prove this conjecture. We also derive a related generating function formula for the images of $gp_λ$ and $gq_λ$ under the $ω$ involution of the ring of symmetric functions. This confirms a conjecture of Chiu and the second author. Using these results, we verify a conjecture of Ikeda and Naruse that the $GQ$-functions are a basis for a ring.

The $q$-Whittaker function $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ associated to a partition $λ$ is a $q$-analogue of the Schur function $s_λ(\mathbf{x})$, and is defined as the $t=0$ specialization of the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. We show combinatorially how to expand $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ in terms of partial flags compatible with a nilpotent endomorphism over the finite field of size $1/q$. This yields an expression analogous to a well-known formula for the Hall-Littlewood functions. We show that considering pairs of partial flags and taking Jordan forms leads to a probabilistic bijection between nonnegative-integer matrices and pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape, proving the Cauchy identity for $q$-Whittaker functions. We call our probabilistic bijection the $q$-Burge correspondence, and prove that in the limit as $q\to 0$, we recover a description of the classical Burge correspondence (also known as column RSK) due to Rosso (2012). A key step in the proof is the enumeration of an arbitrary double coset of $\text{GL}_n$ modulo two parabolic subgroups, which we find to be of independent interest. As an application, we use the $q$-Burge correspondence to count isomorphism classes of certain modules over the preprojective algebra of a type $A$ quiver (i.e. a path), refined according to their socle filtrations. This develops a connection between the combinatorics of symmetric functions and the representation theory of preprojective algebras.
Alternating sign matrices with reflective symmetry and plane partitions: $n+3$ pairs of equivalent statistics and a Cauchy-type identity

Vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices (VSASMs) of order $2n+1$ are known to be equinumerous with lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$ and a central triangular hole of size $2$ that exhibit a cyclical as well as a vertical symmetry, but finding an explicit bijection proving this belongs to the most difficult problems in bijective combinatorics. Towards constructing such a bijection, we generalize the result by introducing certain natural extensions for both objects along with $n+3$ parameters and show that the multivariate generating functions with respect to these parameters coincide. This is a significant step from a constant number of equidistributed statistics to a linear number of statistics in $n$. The equinumeracy of VSASMs and the lozenge tilings is then an easy consequence of this result, which is obtained by specializing the generating functions to signed enumerations for both types of objects and then applying certain sign-reversing involutions. Another main result concerns the expansion of the multivariate generating function into symplectic characters as a sum over totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions, which is in perfect analogy to the situation for ordinary ASMs where the Schur expansion can be written as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions. This is exciting as it is reminiscent of the well-known Cauchy identity, and the Cauchy identity does have a bijective proof using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, and thus the result raises the question of whether there is a variation of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence that does eventually lead to a bijective proof.

We give bijective proofs of orthosymplectic analogues of the Cauchy identity and dual Cauchy identity for orthosymplectic Schur functions. To do so, we present two insertion algorithms; these are orthosymplectic versions of Berele's symplectic insertion algorithms, which were used by Sundaram to give bijective proofs of Cauchy identities for symplectic Schur functions.

We derive several identities involving Ikeda and Naruse's $K$-theoretic Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions. Our main result is a formula conjectured by Lewis and the second author which expands each $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-function in terms of $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions. This formula extends to some more general identities relating the skew and dual versions of both power series. We also prove a shifted version of Yeliussizov's skew Cauchy identity for symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. Finally, we discuss some conjectural formulas for the dual $K$-theoretic Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions of Nakagawa and Naruse. We show that one such formula would imply a basis property expected of the $K$-theoretic Schur $Q$-functions.

We describe a Yang-Baxter integrable vertex model, which can be realized as a degeneration of a vertex model introduced by Aggarwal, Borodin, and Wheeler. From this vertex model, we construct a certain class of partition functions that we show are essentially equal to the super ribbon functions of Lam. Using the vertex model formalism, we give proofs of many properties of these polynomials, namely a Cauchy identity and generalizations of known identities for supersymmetric Schur polynomials.

We introduce a solvable lattice model for supersymmetric LLT polynomials, also known as super LLT polynomials, based upon particle interactions in super n-ribbon tableaux. Using operators on a Fock space, we prove a Cauchy identity for super LLT polynomials, simultaneously generalizing the Cauchy and dual Cauchy identities for LLT polynomials. Lastly, we construct a solvable semi-infinite Cauchy lattice model with a surprising Yang-Baxter equation and examine its connections to the Cauchy identity.
Lattice Models, Hamiltonian Operators, and Symmetric Functions
We give general conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian operator whose discrete time evolution matches the partition function of certain solvable lattice models. In particular, we examine two classes of lattice models: the classical six-vertex model and a generalized family of $(2n+4)$-vertex models for each positive integer $n$. These models depend on a statistic called charge, and are associated to the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$. Our results show a close and unexpected connection between Hamiltonian operators and the Yang-Baxter equation.
The six-vertex model can be associated with Hamiltonians from classical Fock space, and we show that such a correspondence exists precisely when the Boltzmann weights are free fermionic. This allows us to prove that the free fermionic partition function is always a (skew) supersymmetric Schur function and then use the Berele-Regev formula to correct a result from of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg on the free fermionic domain-wall partition function. In this context, the supersymmetric function involution takes us between two lattice models that generalize the vicious walker and osculating walker models.
Then, we prove a sharp solvability criterion for the six-vertex model with charge that provides the proper analogue of the free fermion condition. Building on results by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, we show that this criterion exactly dictates when a charged model has a Hamiltonian operator acting on a Drinfeld twist of $q$-Fock space. The resulting partition function is then a (skew) supersymmetric LLT polynomial, and almost all supersymmetric LLT polynomials appear as partition functions of our lattice models. We also prove a Cauchy identity for skew supersymmetric LLT polynomials. (see 2024 author's note below)
Stable spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, combinatorial identities, and half-space Yang-Baxter random field
Stable spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials labeled by partitions were recently introduced by Borodin and Wheeler in the context of higher spin six vertex models, which are one-parameter deformation of the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We present a new combinatorial definition for the stable spin Hall-Littlewood polynomials, and derive a series of new combinatorial identities, including the skew Littlewood identity, refined Cauchy identity and refined Littlewood identity.
Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, Bufetov and Petrov introduced local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation. Combining the skew Littlewood identity and these moves, we introduce the half-space Yang-Baxter random field for stable spin Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We match the lengths of the partitions in this field with a new dynamic version of stochastic six vertex model in the half-quadrant, which can be mapped to a dynamic version of discrete-time interacting particle system on the half-line with an open boundary.
