Egge, Loehr, and Warrington proved a formula for the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function in terms of its expansion in fundamental quasi-symmetric functions. Their formula involves the coefficients of a modified inverse Kostka matrix. Recently Garsia and Remmel gave a simpler reformulation of Egge, Loehr, and Warrington's result, with a new proof. We give here a simple proof of Garsia and Remmel's version, using a sign-reversing involution.
Variations on the $S_n$-module $Lie_n$
We define, for each subset $S$ of primes, an $S_n$-module $Lie_n^S$ with interesting properties. When $S=\emptyset,$ this is the well-known representation $Lie_n$ of $S_n$ afforded by the free Lie algebra.
The most intriguing case is $S=\{2\},$ giving a decomposition of the regular representation as a sum of {exterior} powers of modules $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ This is in contrast to the theorems of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt and Thrall which decompose the regular representation into a sum of symmetrised $Lie$ modules. We show that nearly every known property of $Lie_n$ has a counterpart for the module $Lie_n^{(2)},$ suggesting connections to the cohomology of configuration spaces via the character formulas of Sundaram and Welker, to the Eulerian idempotents of Gerstenhaber and Schack, and to the Hodge decomposition of the complex of injective words arising from Hochschild homology, due to Hanlon and Hersh.
For arbitrary $S,$ the symmetric and exterior powers of the module $Lie_n^S$ allow us to deduce Schur positivity for a new class of multiplicity-free sums of power sums.

We define operators on semistandard shifted tableaux and use Stembridge's local characterization for regular graphs to prove they define a crystal structure. This gives a new proof that Schur $P$-polynomials are Schur positive. We define queer crystal operators (also called odd Kashiwara operators) to construct a connected queer crystal on semistandard shifted tableaux of a given shape. Using the tensor rule for queer crystals, this provides a new proof that products of Schur $P$-polynomials are Schur $P$-positive. Finally, to facilitate applications of queer crystals in the context of Schur $P$-positivity, we give local axioms for queer regular graphs, generalizing Stembridge's axioms, that partially characterize queer crystals.
The Determination of 2-color zero-sum generalized Schur Numbers
Consider the equation $\mathcal{E}: x_1+ \cdots+x_{k-1} =x_{k}$ and let $k$ and $r$ be positive integers such that $r\mid k$. The number $S_{\mathfrak{z},2}(k;r)$ is defined to be the least positive integer $t$ such that for any 2-coloring $χ: [1, t] \to \{0, 1\}$ there exists a solution $(\hat{x}_1, \hat{x}_2, \ldots, \hat{x}_k)$ to the equation $\mathcal{E}$ satisfying $\displaystyle \sum_{i=1}^kχ(\hat{x}_i) \equiv 0\pmod{r}$. In a recent paper, the first author posed the question of determining the exact value of $S_{\mathfrak{z}, 2}(k;4)$. In this article, we solve this problem and show, more generally, that $S_{\mathfrak{z}, 2}(k, r)=kr - 2r+1$ for all positive integers $k$ and $r$ with $k>r$ and $r \mid k$.
A note on passing from a quasi-symmetric function expansion to a Schur function expansion of a symmetric function
Egge, Loehr and Warrington gave in \cite{ELW} a combinatorial formula that permits to convert the expansion of a symmetric function, homogeneous of degree $n$, in terms of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions into an expansion in terms of Schur functions. Surprisingly the Egge, Loehr and Warrington result may be shown to be simply equivalent to replacing the Gessel fundamental by a Schur function indexed by the same composition. In this paper we give a direct proof of the validity of this replacement. This interpretation of the result in \cite{ELW} has already been successfully applied to Schur positivity problems.
Crystal graphs for shifted tableaux
We define crystal operators on semistandard shifted tableaux, giving a new proof that Schur $P$-functions are Schur positive. We define a queer crystal operator to construct a connected queer crystal on semistandard shifted tableaux of a given shape, providing a new proof that products of Schur $P$-functions are Schur $P$-positive. We also give a rectification map from shifted tableaux to Young tableaux that commutes with the crystal operators and provides a dual algorithm to shifted insertion.
Positive temperature dynamics on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns restricted by wall
The thesis focuses on processes on symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns. In chapter 4, a process with dynamics inspired by the Berele correspondence [Ber86] is presented. It is proved that the shape of the pattern is a Doob $h$-transform of independent random walks with $h$ given by the symplectic Schur function. This is followed by an extension to a $q$-weighted version. This randomised version has itself a branching structure and is related to a $q$-deformation of the $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions. In chapter 5, we present a fully randomised process. This process $q$-deforms a process proposed in [WW09]. In chapter 7 we prove the convergence of the $q$-deformation of the $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions to the classical $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions when $q \to 1$. Finally, in chapter 8 we turn our interest to the continuous setting and construct a process on patterns which contains a positive temperature analogue of the Dyson's Brownian motion of type $B/C$. The processes obtained are $h$-transforms of Brownian motions killed at a continuous rate that depends on their distance from the boundary of the Weyl chamber of type $B/C$, with $h$ related with the $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions.

We give a Pieri-type formula for the sum of $K$-$k$-Schur functions $\sum_{μ\leλ} g^{(k)}_μ$ over a principal order ideal of the poset of $k$-bounded partitions under the strong Bruhat order, which sum we denote by $\widetilde{g}^{(k)}_λ$. As an application of this, we also give a $k$-rectangle factorization formula $\widetilde{g}^{(k)}_{R_t\cupλ}=\widetilde{g}^{(k)}_{R_t} \widetilde{g}^{(k)}_λ$ where $R_t=(t^{k+1-t})$, analogous to that of $k$-Schur functions $s^{(k)}_{R_t\cupλ}=s^{(k)}_{R_t}s^{(k)}_λ$.

We prove some Schur positivity results for the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a (hyper)graph $G$, using connections to the group algebra of the symmetric group. The first such connection works for (hyper)forests $F$: we describe the Schur coefficients of $X_F$ in terms of eigenvalues of a product of Hermitian idempotents in the group algebra, one factor for each edge (a more general formula of similar shape holds for all chordal graphs). Our main application of this technique is to prove a conjecture of Taylor on the Schur positivity of certain $X_F$, which implies Schur positivity of the formal group laws associated to various combinatorial generating functions. We also introduce the pointed chromatic symmetric function $X_{G,v}$ associated to a rooted graph $(G,v)$. We prove that if $X_{G,v}$ and $X_{H,w}$ are positive in the generalized Schur basis of Strahov, then the chromatic symmetric function of the wedge sum of $(G,v)$ and $(H,w)$ is Schur positive.
Schur Ring over Group $\Z_{2}^{n}$, Circulant $S-$Sets Invariant by Decimation and Hadamard Matrices
In this paper a variety of issues are discussed, Schur ring, $S$-sets, circulant orbits, decimation operator and Hadamard matrices and their relation between them is shown. Firstly we define the complete $S$-sets. Next, we study the structure of Schur ring with circulant basic sets over $\Z_{2}^{n}$ and we define the free and non-free circulant $S$-sets, the symmetric, non-symmetric and antisymmetric circulant $S$-sets. We prove that all this $S$-sets are invariants under decimation. Finally, we prove that if a Hadamard matrix exist then this is contained in a complete $S$-set. Also, we prove that can't exist circulant and with one core Hadamard matrices with some particular structure. These theorems include a result known on symmetric circulant Hadamard matrices of order $4n$ only when $n$ is an odd number.
$CI$-property for decomposable Schur rings over an abelian group
A Schur ring over a finite group is said to be decomposable if it is the generalized wreath product of Schur rings over smaller groups. In this paper we establish a sufficient condition for a decomposable Schur ring over the direct product of elementary abelian groups to be a $CI$-Schur ring. By using this condition we reprove in a short way known results on the $CI$-property for decomposable Schur rings over an elementary abelian group of rank at most $5$.
Zero-sum Generalized Schur Numbers
Let $r$ and $k$ be positive integers with $r \mid k$. Denote by $S_{\mathrm{\mathfrak{z}}}(k;r)$ the minimum integer $n$ such that every coloring $χ:[1,n] \rightarrow \{0,1,\dots,r-1\}$ admits a solution to $\sum_{i=1}^{k-1} x_i = x_k$ with $\sum_{i=1}^{k} χ(x_i) \equiv 0 \,(\mathrm{mod }\,r)$. We give some formulas and lower bounds for various instances.

It is a well-known fact that over the complex numbers and for a fixed $k$ and $n$, a generic $s$ in $Sym^2V^*$ vanishes on some $k$-dimensional subspace of $V$ if and only if $n\geq 2k$. Tevelev found exact conditions for the extension of this statement for general symmetric and skew-symmetric multilinear forms, and we extend his work to all possible symmetric types, which corresponds to Schur modules for a general partition.

The Bernstein vertex operators, which can be used to build recursively the Schur functions, are extended to superspace. Four families of super vertex operators are defined, corresponding to the four natural families of Schur functions in superspace. Combinatorial proofs that the super Bernstein vertex operators indeed build the Schur functions in superspace recursively are provided. We briefly mention a possible realization, in terms of symmetric functions in superspace, of the super-KP hierarchy, where the tau-function naturally expands in one of the super-Schur bases.
Algebraic formulas for the structure constants in symmetric functions
Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Schur functions, while the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Hall-Littlewood functions or two universal characters is also given by the combinatorial method. In this paper, using the vertex operator realizations of these symmetric functions, we construct the algebraic forms of these decomposition formulas.

We present an explicit formula for the transition matrix $\mathcal{C}$ from the type $C_n$ degeneration of the Koornwinder polynomials $P_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,a,-a,c,-c\,|\,q,t)$ with one column diagrams, to the type $C_n$ monomial symmetric polynomials $m_{(1^{r})}(x)$. The entries of the matrix $\mathcal{C}$ enjoy a set of three term recursion relations, which can be regarded as a $(a,c,t)$-deformation of the one for the Catalan triangle or ballot numbers. Some transition matrices are studied associated with the type $(C_n,C_n)$ Macdonald polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,b;q,t)= P_{(1^r)}\big(x\,|\,b^{1/2},-b^{1/2},q^{1/2}b^{1/2},-q^{1/2}b^{1/2}\,|\,q,t\big)$. It is also shown that the $q$-ballot numbers appear as the Kostka polynomials, namely in the transition matrix from the Schur polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,q;q,q)$ to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials $P^{(C_n,C_n)}_{(1^r)}(x\,|\,t;0,t)$.
Hall-Littlewood expansions of Schur delta operators at $t = 0$
For any Schur function $s_ν$, the associated {\em delta operator} $Δ'_{s_ν}$ is a linear operator on the ring of symmetric functions which has the modified Macdonald polynomials as an eigenbasis. When $ν= (1^{n-1})$ is a column of length $n-1$, the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{n-1}} e_n$ appears in the Shuffle Theorem of Carlsson-Mellit. More generally, when $ν= (1^{k-1})$ is any column the polynomial $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ is the symmetric function side of the Delta Conjecture of Haglund-Remmel-Wilson. We give an expansion of $ωΔ'_{s_ν} e_n$ at $t = 0$ in the dual Hall-Littlewood basis for any partition $ν$. The Delta Conjecture at $t = 0$ was recently proven by Garsia-Haglund-Remmel-Yoo; our methods give a new proof of this result. We give an algebraic interpretation of $ωΔ'_{s_ν} e_n$ at $t = 0$ in terms of a $\mathrm{Hom}$-space.
Exploring a Delta Schur Conjecture

In \cite{HRW15}, Haglund, Remmel, Wilson state a conjecture which predicts a purely combinatorial way of obtaining the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k}e_n$. It is called the Delta Conjecture. It was recently proved in \cite{GHRY} that the Delta Conjecture is true when either $q=0$ or $t=0$. In this paper we complete a work initiated by Remmel whose initial aim was to explore the symmetric function $Δ_{s_ν} e_n$ by the same methods developed in \cite{GHRY}. Our first need here is a method for constructing a symmetric function that may be viewed as a "combinatorial side" for the symmetric function $Δ_{s_ν} e_n$ for $t=0$. Based on what was discovered in \cite{GHRY} we conjectured such a construction mechanism. We prove here that in the case that $ν=(m-k,1^k)$ with $1\le m< n$ the equality of the two sides can be established by the same methods used in \cite{GHRY}. While this work was in progress, we learned that Rhodes and Shimozono had previously constructed also such a "combinatorial side". Very recently, Jim Haglund was able to prove that their conjecture follows from the results in \cite{GHRY}. We show here that an appropriate modification of the Haglund arguments proves that the polynomial $Δ_{s_ν}e_n$ as well as the Rhoades-Shimozono "combinatorial side" have a plethystic evaluation with hook Schur function expansion.
Properties of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials at $q=1$ and $q=0$

We examine the non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_λ(x;q,t)$ at $q=1$, as well as the more general permuted-basement Macdonald polynomials. When $q=1$, we show that $E_λ(x;1,t)$ is symmetric and independent of $t$ whenever $λ$ is a partition. Furthermore, we show that for general $λ$, this expression factors into a symmetric and a non-symmetric part, where the symmetric part is independent of $t$, while the non-symmetric part only depends on the relative order of the entries in $λ$.
We also examine the case $q=0$, which give rise to so called permuted-basement $t$-atoms. We prove expansion-properties of these, and as a corollary, prove that Demazure characters (key polynomials) expand positively into permuted-basement atoms. This complements the result that permuted-basement atoms are atom-positive. Finally, we show that a product of a permuted-basement atom and a Schur polynomial is again positive in the same permuted-basement atom basis, and thus interpolates between two results by Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg.
The common theme in this project is the application of basement-permuting operators as well as combinatorics on fillings, by applying results in a previous article by the first author.
